Sheffield Steelers owner Tony Smith has confirmed plans are underway to try and bring the Continental Cup Final to the UK.

Paul Thompson’s side confirmed their place in January’s final group with a 4-2 victory over Latvian side Kurbads Riga.

And Smith revealed discussions have begun to try and host the event and have been ‘positive’ so far.

“The Arena have been receptive,” Smith said. “Our first talks have been positive and we have already confirmed to the IIHF that we wish to bring the event to Sheffield.

"We would ensure that the Continental Cup Final would be a massive showpiece event that the IIHF and Continental Cup organising committee would be proud of.

"I'm thrilled we have qualified and congratulate the whole team on an amazing weekend. We are all very proud of their achievement.”

Steelers will play Yunost Minsk, who they faced in this round in Rungsted as well as Nomad Astana of Kazakhstan and Italian side Ritten, who qualified from the other group.

It’s the second year in a row a British team will take part in the Continental Cup Final after Nottingham Panthers, who went on to win the competition last season.
