You cannot talk about the history of the Post 259, Excelsior Legion Baseball Team and program without Jim Peck, its former Coach and current General Manager. Jim retired from actively coaching the team at the end of the 2003 season, but has continued on as the Business Manager and resident expert on all things from arranging games to fund raising. With over 54 years in Minnetonka (over 40 in Legion) baseball, Jim has been recognized in Minnesota, but also nationally. Jim has worked to build the Excelsior Legion Baseball program into one of the finest, most successful American Legion Baseball systems around
A Deer River High School grad in 1958, Jim won 15 athletic letters. The University of Minnesota followed where he graduated in 1963 with a BS in Pharmacy. Jim started as an intern at Deephaven Drug in Minnetonka, became a staff pharmacist upon graduation, bought the drug store in 1976, and sold it in 1999.
After coaching Babe Ruth baseball in Minnetonka for 10 years, Jim moved to the American Legion program with the vision to build an enduring program. Yes there have been many wins and many titles and championships and even a 2nd Place in the World Series. The program has been a place for young coaches as well as players to develop. While the joys have great personal meaning to Jim, he feels the best part of the job is the satisfaction of parents and players. It's been great to see Jim help lead the program and modernize the program. It is easy to take something for granted. But those of us around the Excelsior Legion program are appreciative of all the past and current efforts made by Jim Peck. The kids benefit most of all.
