Westhampton, Southampton Split High-Scoring Doubleheader
Game 1: Breakers Storm Back Late to Take 15-11 Thriller
The first game of Sunday’s Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader between the Westhampton Aviators and the Southampton Breakers featured a wild momentum swing and a combined 26 runs, but it was the Breakers who came out on top with a 15-11 comeback victory at Southampton High School.
Westhampton jumped out to a huge lead early, scoring eight runs in the third inning, fueled by a mix of clutch hits and erratic pitching from Southampton’s bullpen. The Aviators took advantage of 12 walks in the game, with Luke Monico (Marist) (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 3 walks) and Andrew Grenert (Pima CC) (1-for-5, 3 RBI) pacing the offense. Tim Ford (Fordham), Drew McGowan (Marist), and Jasper Adelman (Lehigh) each added RBIs as Westhampton took an 11-2 lead into the fourth.
But the Breakers battled back, scoring four runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 11-6. Then in the sixth, they erupted for nine runs, flipping the game on its head. Collin Quintano (Villanova) was the star of the day, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI. Quintano was one shy of the single-game team record for RBI in a game set by Doug Trimble (Delaware) in 2016.
Other Breaker players that stood out on the Game 1 boxscore were Michael Vilardi (Queens), who had a 2-run single, and Luke Treese (Haverford), who reached base three times and scored four runs. Luke Beyer (Hamilton) tossed three innings of one-run ball to earn the Game 1 win for Southampton.
Game 2: Aviators Respond with 12-2 Rout to Earn Split
After letting Game 1 slip away, the Aviators bounced back emphatically in Game 2 with a 12-2 blowout win, capped by a seven-run first inning.
Westhampton’s bats were patient and opportunistic, drawing 12 walks in the shortened six-inning contest. Mikey Brunetti (Bradley) led the way, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Adelman added two hits, two RBI, and a walk, and Brian Zweigbaum (Post) drove in three runs. Every starter either reached base or contributed offensively.
On the mound, Andrew Butkevicius (Salem State) went four innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs to earn the win. Reliever Dylan Johnson (St. John’s) closed it out with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
Southampton managed just two runs on eight hits, with Treese and Nick Slogik (Rowan College at Gloucester) each driving in a run. But the early damage done by Westhampton proved too much to overcome.
Both teams have a day off on Monday but come back to action on Tuesday when the Breakers host the South Shore Clippers while the Aviators travel to Cochran Park to play the North Fork Ospreys.
