Grand Opening of Our Historic Little League Park in Calgary, Alberta Canada
Rotary Club members passionately supported Little League Baseball in Calgary since the 1930's. On June 7, 1962, the Rotary Club of Manchester passed a motion to construct a Little League diamond at Stanley Park. The original playing field was built in 1962, with the stands and dugouts added in 1963 to complete the facility.
The baseball diamond fulfilled the vision of the Rotary Club, providing a field of dreams for generations of Calgary Little League baseball players until it was destroyed by the Alberta Floods of 2013. The destructive floodwaters completely submerged the diamond, knocking over large trees and rendering the outfield unplayable.
As the flood waters receded, Calgary Rocky Mountain Little League had a vision, a replacement diamond took shape: A signature facility in Calgary's most iconic setting.
This new diamond would be built to ensure the dreams of young baseball players in Calgary would continue for future generations.
Following extensive consultation with the City of Calgary, construction commenced in the summer of 2016 and the facility was completed in August 2017.
Just as the Rotary Club had funded the original diamond 55 years earlier, this new Stanley Park diamond was funded entirely by a generous private donation.
On September 23, 2017, the iconic park will officially re-open as Rose Diamond at Stanley Park. This diamond will be used to develop superior citizens - a place where young players will learn the values of citizenship, discipline, teamwork and well-being. It will be a place to pursue the Little League virtues of Character, Courage and Loyalty while emphasizing the application of Effort and Learning to overcome Mistakes and Adversity. Players, Coaches, and Spectators are asked to respect the Rules, Officials, Opponents, Teammates, and Self. Here, we will Honour the Game.
