NU ACHA Hockey moves to 4-3-0
Niagara ACHA Hockey put up another impressive performance by defeating Oswego State University 7-3. Niagara is undefeated in NECHL play and is now 4-3-0 on the season.
Niagara started off the scoring three minutes into the game. Junior Joey Sheena crashed the net and popped in a rebound on a shot from junior Josh Pietrantonio after he received a pass from sophomore Jeff Monfils. Seven minutes later, Niagara added another goal, again from crashing the net. This time, it was freshman Dalton Bew from senior Charlie Chamberlain and freshman Tyler Stockwell. Niagara’s 2-0 lead did not last long. Niagara goaltender, sophomore Mike Parda, had his shutout streak end on a goal at 12:29 of the first period. Parda’s shutout streak ended at 120:57; one of the longest in NU ACHA Hockey history. Oswego added another goal late in the period to tie the game 2-2 after the first period.
NU and Oswego played a tight second period, much like the first. Niagara got on the board first in the period with a goal from junior Austin Wharry, with assists going to sophomore Dallas Szustak and junior Patrick Gregory. Just a little over a minute later NU struck again with a goal from Patrick Gregory and assists going to Dallas Szustak and senior Jacob Ledyard. Oswego scored with five minutes left in the period to cut Niagara’s lead to 4-3 going into the third period.
The third period was all Niagara. The legs of NU were extremely strong and they out worked and out skated Oswego. Niagara’s speed helped them cash in early into the period when sophomore Andrew Mitch scored from senior Kody Helbig and Jacob Ledyard. NU played comfortably with their 5-3 lead for the majority of the period. Late in the period, Austin Wharry put the puck in the net to extend NU’s lead to 6-3 from Dalton Bew and Kody Helbig. Finally, to officially seal the deal Andrew Mitch put in an empty net goal from Kody Helbig.
Sophomore goaltender Mike Parda faced 32 shots and recorded his fourth victory of the season. Niagara’s next matchup is a rematch of the NECHL championship game in two weekends. Niagara will play Canisius at 7:00pm on October 24 at Buffalo State College, and then on October 26 at 7:30pm at Dwyer Arena.
