EAST MEADOW, New York – The New York Bobcats are proud to announce that defenseman Charles Barber has committed to play and attend school at Plattsburgh University beginning in the fall of 2016.

Barber, 19, is currently in his first season with the Bobcats and has nine points (4g/5a) in 36 games played.

“I saw this as an opportunity to play for a very good program in Plattsburgh,” said Barber.  “It’s close to my hometown in upstate New York, so I will get to be close to family and friends. SUNY schools are strong academically also, and I know I’ll be getting a great education there as well.”

The Queensbury, NY native skated for the CP Dynamo U18 team last year, where he captured a New York State title with teammate Brandon Rathwell.

“Plattsburgh scouted me at one of our games in Hartford, and there were interested in my style of play.  I received a few phone calls from assistant coach Mike Coppola telling me that they will continue to watch me play,” Barber said.  “He liked what he saw and then shortly after I was up for a visit. I was a Cardinal quickly after.”

Drafted in 2014, Barber was selected in the 8th round (161st overall) by Wichita Falls Wildcats in the NAHL Entry Draft.

“We are so proud of Charles.  He has been everything we hoped for when we started recruiting him last season with the Clifton Park Dynamo U18 team.  Coach Shaver and his staff do a great job of preparing their young men for junior hockey and Charles has been solid for us all season,” said Craig Doremus, head coach and general manager of the Bobcats.

“Charles is going to be a very good college hockey player.  His ability to do many things at a high level is impressive.  He is extremely physical, a good puck mover, sees the ice well and plays major minutes for our team in all situations including the power play and penalty kill.  Charles has been a leader with his youth hockey clubs in the past and we expect him to continue to evolve as a leader for the New York Bobcats.

“Plattsburgh is a great fit for Charles.  The staff does a great job with their players and their record speaks for itself.  We couldn’t be more proud or happy for Charles and his family. “

The Bobcats would like to congratulate Charles and his family on taking the next step in his hockey career.

Plattsburgh University is located in Plattsburgh, NY and is a member of the SUNYAC conference (NCAA-D3).
