The OJHL announced today that Kingston Voyageurs forward Brett Seney (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month for December after recording 14 points in eight games played during the month.

The second year native of London, Ontario has been one of the Vees most consistent forwards all season and currently leads the club in scoring with 18 goals on the season.  Seney’s December totals included five goals and nine assists in eight games played, helping Kingston jump back to the top of the OJHL standings, most recently being ranked tenth in the entire CJHL.  Entering the Christmas Break, he was on a five game point streak that saw him record multiple points in all five games, including a four point effort versus the Hamilton Red Wings.  Seney was also one of the North-East Conference All-Star Team’s top players at the recent Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Terrebonne, Quebec, recording four points in five games played to lead the team in scoring.

“I would like to thank the OJHL for picking me this month,” said Seney.  “Could not have accomplished this without my teammates and support of coaching staff.  I would like to use this as a spring board to a strong second half and help my team win a championship and compete for an RBC Cup.”

“I have seen Brett grow and mature as a player and person over the last couple of seasons,” said Voyageurs head coach Colin Birkas.  “We have slowly been giving Brett more and more responsibility with this club and has not let us down.  He was cut from Team Canada East and he used it as fuel to get his game to the next level.  I firmly believe at some point soon he has to be added to the NHL scouting list.  I, along with the rest of the team, are of the belief he is one of the best ‘96 born players in the country.  We are happy to have his efforts recognized and feel it is also a reflection of a strong month for our club.”

Mathew Thompson of the Trenton Golden Hawks was named runner-up to Seney as the North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month.  Recently acquired from the Orangeville Flyers, Thompson has become one the keys to the Golden Hawks attack, recording 14 points in eight December contests.

Born on February 28, 1996, Brett Seney grew-up playing his minor hockey in London, Ontario with the Jr. Knights ‘AAA’ organization, as well as high school hockey with the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Flames.

The diminutive forward would be one of the Jr. Knights alternate captains and top scorers during a championship 2011-12 minor midget season.  Seney finished third on the club in overall scoring with 43 goals and 112 points in 74 games played throughout the year, including 6 goals, 19 points and a team-high 13 assists during their league and Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario championships.  He would also play two games up with the Knights’ midget squad, notching two points, before helping his team finish fourth at the prestigious OHL Cup tournament.

Following the season, Seney was selected by the Oshawa Generals in the 9th round, 170th overall, of the 2012 OHL Priority Selection.  Facing a crossroad, the speedster chose to continue looking for a collegiate scholarship and was recruited to join the Kingston Voyageurs.  Early in his rookie season, the 16-year old committed to join the Merrimack College Warriors beginning with the 2015-16 Hockey East season.  He would finish the regular season with 10 points in 49 games played, while also getting his first taste of junior playoff action, notching two goals as the Vees came within one game of the North-East Conference title, falling to Newmarket in game seven overtime.

This season saw Seney counted on to be one of the Voyageurs offensive leaders and he has not disappointed.  Cut from Team Canada East after being invited to the final selection camp, Seney would be named to Team East, recording two assists in two games at the 2013 CJHL Prospect Game series.  He would be named Player of the Game in game one, helping the East capture the President’s Cup for the first time since 2010.  Returning to Kingston, he has already more than tripled last year’s offensive output and continues to improve each game as he looks to lead Kingston to their first championship since 2009.
