MARCHMENT NAMED NE PLAYER OF MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Cobourg Cougars rookie Mason Marchment has been named the Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month for January after recording 20 points in 11 games played during the month.
The 18-year old fired home 13 goals in January, including a hat trick versus Whitby and a four goal, six point effort in a victory over Wellington. Marchment had five multi-point efforts during the month, helping the Cougars to an 8-3 record to clinch a post-season berth while remaining in the race for the East Division title. The first-year junior player now sits third in overall scoring on the club with 37 points in 44 games played, while leading Cobourg with 19 goals on the season.
"It is an honour to be recognized by the OJHL with the North-East Player-of-the-Month Award," said Marchment. "I would like to thank my teammates, staff, and entire Cougars organization for all their support this season. It is a privilege to play in Cobourg in front of our great fans and we are looking forward to giving them lots of exciting hockey down the stretch and into the playoffs."
"It is great to see Mason recognized for his tremendous improvement over the course of the season," said Cougars Head Coach Curtis Hodgins. "He has worked hard at making himself more of a complete hockey player and he has continued to get better with each game. Mason was outstanding in the month of January and is fully deserving of this award."
Taylor Best of the Whitby Fury was runner-up to Marchment as the North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month. The OJHL leading scorer and October Player-of-the-Month, Best recorded 21 points in 11 games played during the month to solidify his spot at the top of scoring race.

Born on June 3, 1995, Mason Marchment grew up in various towns in Canada and the United States as the son of former NHL defenceman Bryan Marchment. He ultimately settled in Uxbridge, Ontario where he played 'A' and 'AA' hockey in the Uxbridge Stars organization.
Smaller in stature, the classic late bloomer made the jump to 'AAA' hockey in 2011-12, joining the Central Ontario Wolves Minor Midget club. He would spend the next two seasons with the Wolves, finishing the 2012-13 season with 23 goals and 39 points in 27 games played, ultimately earning the invitation to the Cobourg Cougars rookie camp, where he would make an impression on head coach Curtis Hodgins and sign with the team.
Marchment was a free agent invite to the Kitchener Rangers camp in 2012 and this past fall attended the Peterborough Petes camp as part of the club's affiliation agreement with Cobourg. The growing forward has steadily improved his overall game throughout the season and is now one of the club's go-to offensive forces as they prepare for post-season play.
