FIGLIOMENI NAMED SW PLAYER-OF-MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Mississauga Chargers alternate captain Vince Figliomeni (photo credit: Jay Johnston/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month for September after recording 15 points in 10 games played during the month.
The third-year forward finished the month tied atop the OJHL scoring charts, having recorded points in all but two of the Chargers contests. After being shutout on opening night versus Newmarket, Figliomeni went on an eight game point scoring streak that saw him record almost two points/game. His totals included four multi-point efforts and was highlighted by a five point night versus Lindsay that saw him notch a hat trick and the game-winning goal. Scoring at nearly a goal/game pace, Figliomeni's nine goals were the second best total league-wide.
“I am truly honoured to be given this award in such a great league, filled with tons of talent,” said the OJHL’s leading scorer. “This award means that all my hard-work in the summer is paying off and getting me closer to my goal of playing Division 1 hockey. I would like to lead the league in points for the rest of the season, and want my team to try and turn this ship around and start winning some hockey games.”
“On behalf of the entire Mississauga Chargers organization we would like to congratulate Vince on his award,” said the club’s head coach Joe Washkurak. “The Chargers would also like to thank the OJHL and Gongshow Gear on the selection of Vince for this award. It’s truly an honour. Vince has worked very hard over the summer and has been our best player since training camp and has been one of the best players in the entire OJHL. Despite the Chargers slow start, Vince has raised his level of play and has caught the eye of many NCAA and CIS coaches."
Steve Hladin of the Georgetown Raiders was runner-up to Figliomeni as the South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month. The South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month in October last season, Hladin netted 15 points in 7 games played during September.
Born on June 15, 1994, Vince Figliomeni grew-up in Bolton, Ontario, playing much of his minor hockey career in the nearby Vaughan Kings 'AAA' program, including his minor midget season in 2009-10.
Figliomeni would get his first taste of the OJHL in 2011-12 as an affiliated midget with the now-defunct Vaughan Vipers, playing three games for the club and recording his first point; an assist.
The following season he made the full-time jump to junior hockey, joining the Mississauga Chargers as an 18-year old rookie and did not disappoint. Figliomeni finished sixth on the club in scoring with 13 goals and 30 points in 53 games played, while also providing a bit of an edge that saw him finish third with 75 penalty minutes.
Last season, the veteran was a key component of the Chargers return to OJHL playoff action after years of missing out. The diminutive forward led his club with 23 goals, while finishing third with 40 points in 46 regular season contests. His efforts earned an invite to join the South-West Conference All-Star Team that would compete at the 2013 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge held in Terrebonne, Quebec. Figliomeni led the South-West in scoring with four goals and five points as they ultimately finished as runner-up to the host QJAAAHL. Returning to league action, Figliomeni and the Charge got their first taste of post-season action and were in tough against a battle-ready Buffalo Jr. Sabres squad, but held their own stretching the series to six games.
Entering this season, Figliomeni continues to take his game to another level with the hope of a collegiate career clearly in his sights.
