FEAVER NAMED GOALTENDER-OF-MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Whitby Fury netminder Tyler Feaver (photo credit - Shawn Muir/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear Goaltender-of-the-Month for September after posting a perfect 6-0-0 record during the month.
The fourth year veteran backstop got off to the best start of his young career, allowing just nine goals during his first six starts of the season to lead the OJHL with six victories, already more than a third of his totals last season. Ranked third during the month with both his 1.56 goals against average and .938 save percentage, Feaver's stellar play had the Fury positioned well in the always tough East Division standings. Perhaps even more impressive was that all six of his wins came during an extended road trip to kick-off the season. After a 31 save victory on opening night versus North York, Feaver reeled off the winning streak, including his third career shutout over Burlington.
"I'm very honoured to receive this award,” said the veteran goaltender. “To myself, it means that all the work I have put in during the off-season is paying off and that I know I have given my team a chance to compete and win every night. During the off-season I tried to make some mental and physical changes to my game. During the first month of the season I believe that the extra work has paid off and made me a better goalie. I’m happy with my play so far and hope to continue to play well for my team. Goals for this year include having a winning season, going to the Dudley-Hewitt and hopefully making it to the RBC Cup. Aside from team goals, I would like to be able to play college/ university hockey after this season."
“Tyler has exceled on-and-off the ice,” said Fury General Manager John Tugnutt. “His on-ice play has been exceptional, and off-ice, he is a team leader and takes an active role in mentoring in our rookies.”
Justin Kapelmaster of the Trenton Golden Hawks was runner-up to Feaver as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. Kapelmaster posted a perfect 4-0-0 record for the league-leading Hawks with a 1.50 goals against average and .938 save percentage.
Born on November 25, 1994, Tyler Feaver was raised and played his entire minor hockey career in Whitby, Ontario, including his minor midget and midget seasons from 2009-11 with the Whitby Wildcats 'AAA' organization. .
Feaver joined the Whitby Fury as a 16-year old rookie in 2011-12, posting a 9-4-5 record during 22 regular season contests. The high-energy netminder showed his true potential during the post-season as he would play the bulk of the games, leading the young Fury squad to a South-East Conference title and a spot in the OJHL Championship Series, before ultimately falling to the Stouffville Spirit.
The following year, Feaver took on the club's starting role and would continue his upward progression in 43 games played, posting a 20-13-4 record, including a 2.68 goals against average and .915 save percentage. The impressive season came to a disappointing end when they were ousted in the first round of the playoffs. It was off the ice, however, where Feaver would be recognized, garnering OJHL Humanitarian-of-the-Year honours for his tireless work and responsibility in helping care for Tori Lacey, who was a fellow high school student that has Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Although last year was a bit of a set-back, Feaver still had impressive numbers, including a 16-7-3 record, and he is clearly back with something to prove as he closes out his OJHL career.
