RICHER NAMED GOALIE OF MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Kingston Voyageurs netminder David Richer (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear Goaltender-of-the-Month for October after posting a league-high eight victories during the month.
Joining the Vees at the end of September, Richer immediately took over the starter role and posted an 8-2-0 record in November to march Kingston to within striking distance of the league-leading Trenton Golden Hawks, while being ranked 20th countrywide in the most recent CJHL Top 20 Rankings. Richer would allow more than three goals in a game just twice during the month, while stopping more than 30 shots in five of his ten appearances. All but one of his eight wins came against Conference opponents and were highlighted by a 33-save shutout of Lindsay to open the month, as well as a 26-save shutout over division rival Whitby. Richer's totals included an impressive 2.30 goals against average and .926 save percentage.
A native of Mirabel, Quebec, Richer took a round-about way in his journey to the OJHL. Playing in the Quebec Midget 'AAA' League as a member of the Saint-Eustache Vikings, Richer was selected by the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the 9th round, 148th overall, of the 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft. Playing two games for the Phoenix in 2012-13, Richer found his way to the Vaudreuil-Dorion Mustangs of the QJAAAHL (now QJHL) in 2013-14 and then on to the Gloucester Rangers of the CCHL last season. Thus far this year, Richer has posted an impressive 10-2-0 record with three shutouts, tied for tops in the league, and a 2.25 goals against average, which ranks fifth among all OJHL netminders.
Daniel Urbani of the Trenton Golden Hawks was runner-up to Richer as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. After winning the award in September, Urbani continued his impressive play that has kept the Golden Hawks at the top of the OJHL standings. He posted a 4-2-1 record in October with three shutouts, a 1.38 goals against average and .938 save percentage.
