The OJHL announced today that Trenton Golden Hawks netminder Daniel Urbani (photo credit - Tim Bates/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear Goaltender-of-the-Month for February after posting a perfect 7-0-0 record to close out the 2015-16 regular season.
Capturing the award for the second time this season, along with being named runner-up in October, Urbani's tremendous season continues entering the post-season as he reeled-off eight consecutive victories, including seven in February. Allowing just 10 goals against, Urbani recorded a scintillating 1.42 goals against average, tops among all netminders in February, along with a .933 save percentage in leading Trenton to the OJHL Regular Season Championship. Highlights of the month, include four of the seven wins over North-East Conference contenders the Kingston Voyageurs and Markham Royals, and an 18 save, 4-0 shutout over the Whitby Fury. Urbani lowered his overall goals against average to 1.69, the fourth lowest goals against average in OJHL history.
A native of Coquitlam, B.C., Urbani was selected by the Vancouver Giants in the 11th round, 233rd overall, of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft from the North Shore Bantam organization. After bouncing between the BCHL, AJHL and CCHL over two-and-a-half seasons, Urbani ultimately found himself on the move to the Kingston Voyageurs midway through the 2014-15 season. He found his rhythm and finished the regular season with a 9-7-0 record and a 1.80 goals against average, taking home runner-up honours for the OJHL Gongshow Gear Goaltender-of-the-Month in February. Urbani grabbed hold of the starter’s role in the post-season and never let go, as he marched the Voyageurs to North-East Conference title, as well as game seven of the 2015 OJHL Championship Series before falling to the back-to-back champion Toronto Patriots. On the move again during the off-season, Urbani got off to a quick start in Trenton, capturing Goaltender-of-the-Month honours in September. Along with a league-low 1.69 goals against average, Urbani led the OJHL with 34 wins, 5 shutouts and finished third with a .930 save percentage.
Brendan Bonello of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens was runner-up to Urbani as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. Bonello posted a 6-1-0 record with a 2.10 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.
