B. JACOME NAMED MOST GENTLEMANLY
The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Brendan Jacome (photo credit - Tim Bates/OJHL Images) of the Georgetown Raiders has been named the recipient of the OJHL Most Gentlemanly Player Award.
Jacome becomes the second consecutive member of the Georgetown Raiders to win the Most Gentlemanly Player Award, joining former teammate Steve Hladin who took home the honour last season. The four year OJHL veteran and Raiders alternate captain finished second on the club in scoring with 58 points, while recording just six penalty minutes in 53 games played.
Combining with his younger brother Jack to form one of the league's most formidable 'one-two' punches, Jacome set career-highs in most offensive categories, including leading the Raiders with 32 goals, tied for sixth best among all OJHL players. The sniper and key cog on Georgetown's special teams units also led the club with 10 power play goals, 3 shorthanded goals and 8 game-winning goals, which ranked third in the OJHL.
The 20-year old Caledon, Ontario native is the epitome of fair-play and sportsmanship, having recorded just 30 penalty minutes in 202 career OJHL regular season games over the course of his four seasons. Jacome would go the majority of the season without receiving a call for a penalty-free streak of 42 games, kicking-off with their opener on September 5 and lasting until he was called for a tripping minor early in the second period of their January 23 game versus Mississauga. He would receive just two more minor penalties during the final 10 games of the season, a pair of roughing minors during games versus Trenton and North York, to finish the season with a mere six minutes in penalties over the course of the entire season.
Helping the Raiders capture a second consecutive West Division and South-West Conference Regular Season title, Jacome was named the OJHL Gongshow Gear South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month for November after posting 16 points, including 4 game-winning goals during the month. Jacome is committed to join the University of Ottawa Gee Gees beginning with the 2016-17 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season.
The OJHL Most Gentlemanly Player Award is awarded to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, combined with a high-standard and proficiency of on-ice playing ability throughout the regular season.
Ryan Taylor of the Whitby Fury is runner-up in the OJHL Award balloting to Jacome.
Added to the Fury roster during the off-season, Taylor helped lead the team to a playoff position in 2015-16, finishing second on the team in scoring with 56 points in 54 regular season games. The Newcastle, Ontario native accomplished this while taking just three penalties during the season for six penalty minutes, including a stretch of 31 games without a penalty from September 13 to December 9.
The OJHL Top Defenceman and Goaltender-of-the-Year Award recipients will be announced next week.
