Joining the Golden Hawks this season after having spent the previous three years with the GOJHL’s Welland Jr. Canadians Junior ‘B’ squad, Chris Janzen couldn’t imagine a more perfect start to his OJHL career. The 19-year old helped lead the defending champions to a flawless September record, going undefeated in nine consecutive September contests. Janzen’s 8-0-0 record in nine games played (he was rested after allowing no goals on 11 shots versus Pickering on September 23) saw him allow just 12 goals against for a sparkling 1.39 goals against average, while posting one shutout and .938 save percentage, including a key divisional victory over the Whitby Fury on the final day of the month. Kicking-off September in style, the Golden Hawks were ranked #1 in the entire Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) to start the 2016-17 season.
A native of Pelham, Ontario and a product of the Pelham Panthers minor hockey organization, Janzen would join the nearby Welland Jr. Canadians for the pre-season in 2012-13 season, but the club chose to go with a pair of veteran backstops. He joined the Canadians full-time in 2013-14 and would spend the next three seasons as one of the club's primary netminders. The 2013-14 season would prove to be his most fruitful. After being named the GOJHL's Golden Horseshoe Conference September Goalie of the Month, Janzen was selected to play in the GOJHL Top Prospects Game held in Port Colborne, Ontario, stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced for Team White during a shootout loss.
Connor Ryckman of the Wellington Dukes was runner-up to Janzen as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. Joining the Dukes from the Newmarket Hurricanes this past off-season, Ryckman posted an 8-1-0 record with a 2.21 goals against average and .932 save percentage during September.
