JANZEN NAMED GOALIE OF MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Trenton Golden Hawks netminder Chris Janzen (photo credit - Tim Bates/OJHL Images) has been named the Bardown Goaltender-of-the-Month for December after posting a perfect eight win record during the month.
Janzen becomes the first netminder and player to win three Player-of-the-Month awards during the same season, while earning top goalie honours for the third time in just four months this season. His month included an undefeated 8-0-0 record in eight games played to match his September totals, while leading the Golden Hawks back to the top of the OJHL standings. Janzen's totals include a 1.75 goals against average, along with a .942 save percentage. Not once during December did Janzen allow more than three goals, while allowing just a single marker twice and a 30-save, 5-0 shutout of Stouffville on December 16. Perhaps the most important victory over of the month was a 42 save performance in a win over division rival and the 2017 RBC Cup host Cobourg Cougars. Janzen enters January currently on an impressive 13 game winning streak.
A native of Pelham, Ontario, Janzen would play 'AAA' hockey in nearby Niagara Falls before closing out his minor hockey career with the Southern Tier Admirals 'AAA' organization. Janzen would then join the nearby Welland Jr. Canadians for the pre-season in 2012-13 season, but the club chose to go with a pair of veteran backstops. He joined the Canadians full-time in 2013-14 and would spend the next three seasons as one of the club's primary netminders. The 2013-14 season would prove to be his most fruitful. After being named the GOJHL's Golden Horseshoe Conference September Goalie of the Month, Janzen was selected to play in the GOJHL Top Prospects Game held in Port Colborne, Ontario, stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced for Team White during a shootout loss. Joining Trenton this season, he made an immediate impact, post an undefeated record in September to be named the OJHL Bardown Goaltender-of-the-Month and he would be named a member of Team OJHL Oates, allowing just two goals in two games played at the 2016 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Cornwall, Ontario.
Connor Ryckman of the Wellington Dukes was runner-up to Janzen as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. Ryckman posted a 3-0-0 record with a 1.00 goals against average after allowing just three goals in three games played, along with a .959 save percentage.
