ASTORINO NAMED GOALIE OF MONTH
The OJHL announced today that Georgetown Raiders netminder Josh Astorino (photo credit - Shawn Muir/OJHL Images) has been named the Bardown Goaltender-of-the-Month for January after posting a 1.68 goals against average during the month.
Astorino has played a huge role this year in the Raiders continued success in sitting atop of the OJHL standings for much of the second half of the season. Posting a 6-1-0 record during January to lead the OJHL in wins, the 20-year old posted a sparkling 1.68 goals against average, along with a .945 save percentage in facing more than 200 shots throughout the month. Reeling off six consecutive victories, Astorino opened January with a 25-save shutout victory over Stouffville and went on to five key South-West Conference wins, including two, 30+ save performances. He finished the month with an impressive 34 save, 1-0 overtime loss, to their West Division rival Burlington Cougars.
The Niagara Falls, Ontario native grew-up playing minor hockey around the region before making the jump to junior hockey in 2013-14. After attending the Milton Icehawks pre-season camp, Astorino ultimately kicked-off his junior career as a member of the famed Grimsby Peach Kings Junior ‘C’ club and would lead the team to both an NDJCHL regular season and playoff title, while taking home Top Goaltender honours with a 13-3-1 record, 1.87 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. He was even better in the playoffs, posting a 10-1 record with a 1.60 goals against average and .940 save percentage. Ultimately the Peach Kings fell in the OHA semi-final to the eventual Schamlz Cup champion Lakefield Chiefs. The following season saw Astorino join the nearby Thorold Blackhawks, where he would spend two seasons between the pipes from 2014-16. He would play in the 2015 Golden Horseshoe Conference All-Star Game and would be named the Conference’s Goaltender of the Month in February of 2016. His performance over the past two years, ultimately saw Astorino recruited by the Georgetown Raiders and he has not disappointed in 2016-17. Astorino currently leads the OJHL with a 1.97 goals against average, as well as a .935 save percentage in 33 games played, while posting a 27-3-1 record with two shutouts for the OJHL’s top club.
Mario Cavaliere of the Burlington Cougars was runner-up to Astorino as the Goaltender-of-the-Month. Cavaliere posted a 5-1-0 record during January with two shutouts, a 1.96 goals against average and a .937 save percentage.
