JACOME NAMED MVP
The Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) today announced that Jack Jacome (photo credit - Andy Corneau/OJHL Images) of the Georgetown Raiders has been named the recipient of the OJHL Most Valuable Player Award.
The 2015-16 OJHL Rookie-of-the-Year Award recipient continued his offensive dominance throughout this season, ultimately winning the Top Scorer Award with a magical performance on the final night of the season, while also being named an OJHL 1st Team All-Star.
Jacome becomes the third member of the Raiders to be named OJHL Most Valuable Player, as well as the second in three years, joining Steve Hladin who received the honour in 2014-15 (also won by Stace Page in 2000-01).
The 18-year old native of Caledon, Ontario led Georgetown in virtually every offensive statistical category, while topping all OJHL scorers with 57 assists and 91 points in 53 regular season games played this season. Also one of the league's top marksmen, Jacome finished third in the OJHL with 34 goals on the season. Jacome was instrumental in the Raiders success with the man advantage this season, finishing as the top-ranked power play unit with a 29.20% success rate, while he tied for the league lead with 31 power play points, and his 10 goals and 21 assists with the man advantage ranked fifth and third respectively among all scorers. Adding seven game-winning goals this season, the Raiders alternate captain helped the club capture their first OJHL regular season title since 2011-12.
The diminutive forward posted two scoring streaks that surpassed 10 games. The first from September 26 to October 23 saw Jacome go 11 consecutive games with a point, including 8 goals and 20 points, while the second streak from November 20 to January 14 saw him register 8 goals and 22 points in 13 straight contests. Jacome recorded points in 44 of his 53 games this season, never going more than two consecutive games without at least a single point, while notching multiple points in 26 games and 5 multi-goal outings. Highlights of the season, include a five point effort and a pair of career-high six point performances.
Twice this season, in both December and February, Jacome was named the Bardown South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month. He would record a pair of assists as a member of Team OJHL Hawerchuk at the 2016 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge held in Cornwall, Ontario. Jacome is committed to the Clarkson University Golden Knights.
The OJHL Most Valuable Player Award is awarded annually to the player adjudged to be the most valuable player to his club’s success throughout the course of the regular season.
Brayden Stortz of the Wellington Dukes has been named runner-up in the OJHL award balloting to Jacome.
Also the runner-up as OJHL Top Scorer and a 1st Team All-Star, Stortz led the league with 37 goals, while finishing second among all players with 90 points and third with 53 assists. Named the Bardown North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month in both September and January, he was also a member of Team OJHL Coffey at the 2016 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge and the OJHL '96 All-Star Team that faced Team Canada East in an exhibition game for the 2016 World Junior 'A' Challenge.
The Ontario Junior Hockey League will continue the tradition of honouring its year-end award winners with the 7th Annual OJHL Awards Ceremony prior to game one or two of the 2017 OJHL Championship Series next week. At this time, the 2016-17 OJHL Fan Favourite Award recipient will also be announced.
