DAY ONE AT THE EASTERN CANADA CUP IS IN THE BAG
Eight games were played on day one of the Eastern Canada Cup Challenge at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Gardens in Trenton. Each game consisted of two periods of hockey followed, if necessary, by a shootout. Three points are awarded to a team for a regulation win, two for a shootout win and one for a shootout loss.. The teams are divided into two groups of five. Group 'A' has LHJQ 'Burrows', OJHL's 'Coffey' and 'Hawerchuk', CCHL 'Red' (Robinson) and the NOJHL. Group 'B' consists of OJHL's 'Oates' and 'Nieuwendyk', MHL, CCHL 'White' (Yzerman) and LHJQ 'St. Louis'. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday with the final following at 7.30 p.m.
OJHL 'Team Coffey', coached by Wellington Dukes' Scott McCrory and Lindsay Muksies' Jon Campbell and OJHL 'Team Hawerchuk', coached by Kingston's Peter Goulet and Burlington's Terry Richardson, opened up proceedings. This one would go to the Coffeys by a 4-2 score. It took less than a minute for Aurora Tigers' rookie ANTHONY ROMANO, tied for 13th. in League scoring, to put them ahead and that would hold up until near the end of the opening half when MAX EWART, from the host Golden Hawks, tied it up scoring his first of two in the contest. Both Romano and Ewart have found the net 11 times for their respective clubs this season. JACK MCBAIN, from the Toronto Junior Canadiens, currently seventh in League pointscoring, put the Coffeys ahead to stay just past the four minute mark of the second and Toronto Patriots' COLTON KALEZIC would add another just eight seconds after. Just over a minute later Ewart tabbed his second to make it a 3-2 game before BEN EVANS, from the Wellington Dukes, found the empty net for the 4-2 final in favour of Team Coffey. Evans had two assists for the the winners with other helpers going to Romano and blueliners Ryan Wells of the Patriots and Hudson Lambert of the Orangeville Flyers. Registering two assists each for Team Hawerchuk were Mitchell Martan of the Dukes, who leads his club with 30 points, and rookie Eric Ciccolini from the Milton IceHawks. The winning goalkeeper Chris Elliot of the Oakville Blades who made 25 saves while for Team Hawerchuk Georgetown's Mario Cavaliere stopped 24 shots. It was a penalty-free contest.

Game two featured the OJHL's 'Team Oates', coached by Whitby Fury's Rob Pearson and the Toronto Junior Canadiens' Jeff Angelidis against OJHL 'Team Nieuwendyk' with Joe Washkurak of the Mississauga Chargers and Oakville Blades' Garrett Rutledge behind the bench.
FRASER KIRK of the Newmarket Hurricanes goals against average is 1.96, good for second place in the League but he had been unable to record a shutout in 17 games, however he did manage that feat today in goal for Team Oates saving 19 shots for the 1-0 win. At the other end of the ice Whitby Fury's Nate McDonald turned back 27. The game's only goal came at 15.47 of the opening frame. The St. Michael's Buzzers' TY JACKSON scored it with assists from twin brother Dylan and Georgetown Raiders' defenseman Zack Elson. The 16-year-old Jackson brothers from Oakville, Ontario have had rookie seasons to date with Dylan recording 23 points including 16 goals and Ty contributing 21 points including 15 assists.

Game three saw CCHL 'Red' under the direction of Jason Clarke of the Carleton Place Canadians turn back the NOJHL, with Kyle Brick of the Blind River Beavers leading the bench, by a 3-1 count. Scoring for the Reds were Canadians' ZACH TUPKER with a pair (the Collingwood native is one of twelve players from the that club, currently number #2 in CJHL rankings, on this squad including his twin brother Ben) and BRENDAN BROWNE of the Pembroke Lumber Kings. For the NOJHL it was CHRISTIAN BARDARSON from the Soo Michigan Eagles getting the goal. Both of Tupker's scores came in the second period while Bardarson opened the scoring just under two minutes into the contest. The winning goalie Jeremie Forget of Carleton Place had to make just eight saves for the win. In nineteen games this season Forget has fashioned a 1.62 GAA with two shutouts.

Game four pitted the CCHL 'White' team under Head Coach Martin Dagenais of the Ottawa Junior Senators against the Maritime Hockey League (MHL) under Head Coach Shawn Evans of the Bearcats of Truro. In the first half KEENAN REYNOLDS of the Navan Grads and ELIE BOULERICE of the Junior Senators had goals for the Whites with CAMPBELL PICKARD, a 14 goalscorer from the Bearcats tallying for the MHL. In the second the CCHL squad scored three more without reply as DAVID JANKOWSKI, from the Hawkesbury Hawks, who stands third in League pointscoring, ZACHARY SALLOUM of the Grads (both on the powerplay) and NICK LALONDE of the Sens found the net for the 5-1 final score. Matthew Petizian of the 'Hawks made 19 saves to record the victory.

Game five pitted the OJHL's 'Team Coffey' (1-0 coming in) against LHQJ 'Burrows' led by Head Coach Robert Dubuc of the Cobras de Terrebonne who were the Leagues representatives in the 2017 Royal Bank Cup and have eight players on this club. Jett Alexander got the call in net for the Coffeys and for the Burrows it was veteran Jeremy Belisle. CHARLES ROBIDAS of the Rangers de Montreal-Est got the Burrows ahead just over two minutes into the second period before the Coffeys got it back at 8.49 when the Oakville Blades' leading goalscorer ZACH BRAMWELL scored assisted by teammate Thomas Maia and the Toronto Patriots' Lee Lapid. ANTHONY ROMANO got his second of the tournament to give the OJHL reps the lead with helpers from Jack McBain and Ben Evans (his fourth point of the day). The Quebec team was not to be denied, however, and they equalized with a goal from Montreal-Est's CHARLES-OLIVIER OUIMET with just under seven minutes remaining and before it was all over they would score three more for the 5-2 win. CHARLES TAILLON of Terrebonne and empty-netters from LUCAS THIERUS (St. Jerome Panthers) and JACOB LAPIERRE (Valleyfield
Braves) were the scorers.

Game six on the slate featured the OJHL's 'Nieuwendyk' (0-1) versus the LHJQ 'St. Louis' team coached by Pierre Petroni of the College Francais de Longueuil. VINCENT CHAPLEAU, who has 56 points in just 21 games and had 109 last season for Longueuil, opened the scoring with the only goal in the first half. The Quebec Leaguers would add three more in the second frame for the 4-0 win. Accounting for the goals were MAXIME CHAGNON of Longueuil on a powerplay, PHILLIPE PELLETIER-LEBLANC of the Gatineau Flames and LUDOVIC KARSH (Longueuil). Pelletier-LeBlanc and Chapleau are currently tied for second-place in LHJQ pointscoring. Posting the shutout was GABRIEL MORENCY who saved sixteen shots. Bradley van Schubert of the Aurora Tigers took the loss saving 23. Two games for OJHL 'Nieuwendyk' and no goals, a tough start for them in the tournament.

Game seven matched OJHL 'Hawerchuk' (0-1) against CCHL 'Red' (1-0). The OJHL squad would strike first with an early unassisted marker by Milton rookie ERIC CICCOLINI. He has seven goalbut on just their second shot on goals and as many assists to lead the struggling West Division team in scoring so far. Cobourg Cougars captain MAC LOWRY made it 2-0 for the OJHL side at 13.06 assisted by teammate Connor MacEachern and North York Rangers blueliner Joey Maziarz. ANDREW RINALDI of the Dukes gave them a 3-0 advantage at 2.50 of the second half with the assist to Christian Dedonato of the Newmarket Hurricanes. Rinaldi's elder brother, Anthony, played for Kingston in 2015-2016 and now attends Union College. The Chargers' LUCA DURANTE posted the clean sheet making 20 saves. Luca is the younger brother of Stefano who was goalie on the Cobourg Cougars RBC championship winning team and now attends AIC. A win and a loss now for these two squads and a good 'bounceback' by the 'Hawerchuks'.

The eighth and final contest of day one had two teams who had won their first games facing off against each other- OJHL 'Oates' and CCHL 'White'. ZACH SALLOUM keyed a powerplay to give the CCHL team an early lead but on just their second shot on goal the Oates tied it with REX MOE of Trenton doing the honours. Moe, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is in his second season with the Golden Hawks has a lucky 13 goals and as many assists to lead the club. Rookie Nicholas Zabaneh of the Buzzers assisted on the score. It took the Whites just 37 seconds into the second half to go up 2-1 with OWEN GUY of Ottawa getting the puck past Milton rookie Noah Battaglia. Team Oates came back again scoring on their fifth shot courtesy Toronto Patriots' winger BRETT BANNISTER, who celebrated his nineteenth birthday on Remembrance Day. Ty Jackson and Zack Elson had the assists. That lead would last to only 9.39 when CAMERON WHITE of the Jr. Senators made it a 3-2 game. OWEN GUY with his second of the game- he also had an assist- salted the game way for the CCHL'ers scoring with two and a half minutes left for the 4-2 final. The shotclock would end up showing a 33-7 advantage to the Whites.
