TRENTON’S KIM NAMED OJHL SCHOLASTIC PLAYER OF YEAR

April 9, 2020, Mississauga, ON ….  The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Adam Kim of the Trenton Golden Hawks is the OJHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season.

Kim, who will receive a $500 scholarship from the OJHL Foundation, is the OJHL nominee for a national award.

"We are extremely happy to contribute a $500 scholarship to the OJHL Scholastic Player of the Year this year in the absence of the past sponsor RBC,” said OJHL Foundation Executive Director Rick Morocco. “Congratulations to Adam Kim. He is a worthy award winner and the OJHL Foundation wishes him well in his future scholastic career."

Along with receiving the annual OJHL award, Kim is one of 10 finalists in the running for the Hockey Canada/Canadian Junior Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year Award, which will be announced at a later date.

The OJHL is announcing the winners of its annual awards this spring.

The OJHL scholastic player honour is “awarded to the player adjudged to best combine success on the ice with his club, along with success in school”.

Kim, 20, played four seasons in the OJHL, including the first three with his hometown Kingston Voyageurs. He began the 2019-20 season with Johnston of the NAHL before returning to the OJHL, and the Golden Hawks.

Peter Goulet coached Kim in both Kingston and Trenton and knows him well.

“Great young man from a very good family,” he said. “They support him well”

Kim took two online courses per term from Queen’s University in Kingston the past two seasons, scoring A’s in three of his final four courses.

He was exempted from daily morning skates and workouts in Trenton to study.

Family and school trump hockey, Goulet says. Kim is one of several Golden Hawks who took online post-secondary courses last season.

“Family is the most important thing in life,” said Goulet, the OJHL’s 2019-20 Executive of the Year. “Then school. Then hockey. If a player has to miss a game because of an assignment or test, or for family reasons, that comes first. Hockey is third.”

If there’s a secret to his academic success, Kim says it’s making use of all available time. That includes studying during bus trips and on afternoons before practice.

“Working hard and finding the time to do schoolwork,” he said. “Don’t be messing around. Stay on top of your work.”

On the ice, Kim had 73 goals and 93 assists during his OJHL career.

He tallied 50 points in 44 games this year, building on a 67-point 2018-19 season in Kingston.

Kim is still considering his university options for this fall but is leaning toward Queen’s or Ottawa. He’ll study commerce wherever he goes.
