Sullivan Sparkes of the Trenton Golden Hawks (photo credit – Amy Deroche / OJHL Images) has confirmed his commitment to join the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in his home town of Waterloo, ON beginning with the 2020-21 season.

The forward was part of an 11-player recruiting class unveiled by Laurier head coach Greg Puhalski Monday.

“We are excited to welcome 11 great people to our program,” Puhalski said. “Our team has added character student-athletes that will promote the values of our Hawk family! These individuals will be a large part of our program for years to come.”

Other OJHL graduates in the group include Liam Stevens, Nick McHugh and Conor Ali (Brantford), Devlin Shanahan (Mississauga) and Adrian Nabuurs (Collingwood).

The 21-year-old from Waterloo joined the Golden Hawks in the second half of last season from Nova Scotia’s Pictou County Crushers in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

He had six goals and eight assists in 13 games with the Golden Hawks.

“Sparkie is a very good player, a great competitor,” said Trenton GM and Head Coach Peter Goulet. “As you know, we only had him for two months and one playoff round. But he made an instant impact with our team as a leader and he fit in like a glove. We were very lucky to acquire him at the deadline. Sullivan was very coachable, he was capable of playing in every situation.”

Sparkes split 2018-19 between Summerside of the MJAHL and Charlottetown of the QMJHL.

A fifth-round pick of the Oshawa Generals in the 2015 Ontario Junior Hockey League draft, Sparkes played two-plus seasons in Oshawa before landing in Charlottetown.

Congratulations to Sullivan and best of luck in the OUA and U SPORTS.

The OJHL, the largest Jr. A hockey league in Canada, has had more than 100 NCAA, U Sports, CHL and professional commitments in 2019-20 – including more than 40 NCAA Division I scholarships.
