The Stouffville Spirit has signed defenceman Ethan Schoonderbeek from the Peterborough Petes U18 AAA squad ahead of the Ontario Junior Hockey League season.

The 17-year-old from Enniskillen saw action in two games with the Spirit last season as an affiliate player.

Schoonderbeek played in the Clarington Toros AAA organization ahead of his U18 season. He joins fellow 2019-20 Spirit affiliate Ryan Cutler (Central Ontario Wolves) on the 2020-21 roster.

“Ethan is another AP who we’ve signed full time due to his work ethic, skill and determination,” said Spirit head coach Andrew Campoli. “He provides more depth on our back end and we are excited to have a strong defensive mindset. Ethan leads by example and his positive attitude will fit in great with the rest of our players.

Schoonderbeek was a 13th-round pick of the Erie Otters in the 2019 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

The OJHL announced Thursday it is aiming to begin the pandemic-delayed 2020-21 season in early January. Exhibition games are now permitted.

The Spirit was preparing for the second round of the league playoffs when junior hockey in Canada was shut down by COVID-19 last March.
