14U WOLVERINES SHOWING GROWTH
CCM Denver
Beginning the season in Colorado, the Wolverines were eager to play and this was on full display. A dominating performance to start the season with a seven-goal game driving us to start the season with a win. In our second game the team faced the eventual tournament champions which resulted in a loss, but this didn’t stop the Wolverines from looking uphill.
With one round robin game to go, it was a must win to move into championship play in which the Wolverines played a competitive game and finished with a 2-1 win to move on. The quarterfinal opponent was the Jr. Sun Devils, with another great performance we continued our success with a big win leading the Wolverines into the semi-finals. Although the team was playing strong and fast, we found ourselves in a tough battle against the Chicago Blues who ended up curbing the Wolverines weekend. Overall a great start to the season as the team left Denver with a winning record 3-2.

Seattle NW Showcase
Returning back to Washington for our first set of games, the Wolverines faced a fast playing Vegas team who took control early on. Despite losing the game 5-1, much of Vegas’ offense came from one line which we were unable to shut down. The second game resulted in a strong performance while taking control and leading throughout the game to beat Boise 6-3. Our lone game Saturday afternoon against Portland did not yield the result we were looking for as the team fell to an early deficit and could not gain momentum at any point with several chances where the Wolverines could not capitalize.
A much-anticipated game against SnoKing for our first matchup of the season, the Wolverines were dominant from puck drop. Most impressive was the defensive play by the team while the team locked down the front of the net in our first shut out of the season. A great finish to the weekend with the Wolverines beating SnoKing 1-0, a team we will face throughout the season and look to repeat this success in the State Championships come February.

Wenatchee NW Showcase
After beating SnoKing in their NW Showcase in a tight 1-0 game, our opponent had an edge to start the Wenatchee showcase. A much more physical gameplay caught the Wolverines off guard as we couldn’t quite gain control. Following a tough outing in the second matchup against SnoKing, the Wolverines responded well in both games against Boise.
Another competitive game with goals back and forth after giving up an early lead, the team gained momentum in a comeback to defeat Boise 3-2. After a strong rebound the Wolverines were once again confident and in control outplaying the Steelheads exploding with offense in a 5-2 win. A great finish with an overall record of .500 on the weekend.

Wenatchee hosts Northwest Stars
Uphill battles early in each game was the story for the Wolverines. Both games we found ourselves down two and three goal deficits, a lot of heart in the first game on display as the players battled back to end in a tie with opportunities late in the game for the go-ahead goal. With energy exerted early in the day, a similar story in the afternoon game as a three-goal deficit was out of reach. After three goals in the first three minutes of play, the team competed the rest of the game although being deflated early on. As we look into the new year there will be redemption to be had when we face-off against the Stars on January 8th.

CCM Chicago
Despite a weekend going winless, the positive growth of this group was on display in arguably the toughest division of round robin play. Finding ourselves in tight battles with our opponents into the third period in which we couldn’t quite find a way to execute offensively or defensively to bear down late. Our first two opponents we faced continued into Sunday, Protec being knocked out of the semi-finals by Tampa Bulls who went on to win the CCM Chicago Invite. Tampa being the Wolverines second game in which we were tied 1-1 until half way through the third period when the game opened up.
In our third-round robin game against the Chicago Blues, a similar story with the Wolverines up 2-1 until the last 6 minutes of the game in which we learned again what it takes to play a complete game. Although ultimately this game showed how far the Wolverines have come this season as we faced Chicago in our first tournament of the year with the Blues outplaying us in a 4-0 victory. Yet the Wolverines had them on their heels through two and a half periods controlling the game in all aspects of physicality and score. As we continue down this path of growth for this group we can’t wait to see what the second half of the season holds.
