14U WOLVERINES CLOSE OUT SEASON STRONG
Presidents Day Tournament
Following the State Championships, the Wolverines headed off to the Presidents Day tournament in Phoenix, AZ in preparation for the District Tournament in Irvine, CA. The team had a spark in their step game one against Arizona Hockey Union storming the Knights in a 5-0 win. Game two did not yield the result the Wolverines were seeking as they didn’t get back to their identity until the third period, although the Jr. Coyotes successfully kept us off the scoreboard. A frustrated group knew what it was going to take to reach the semifinals in a morning matchup against the Las Vegas. Offense came in bunches as the Wolverines contained the Storm with great defensive play while leading to an explosive eight goals.
In the semifinal matchup and the second game of the day, our opponent was AHU once again. Arizona won their last two games and were focused to get pucks on net early and often, which led them to a quick three goal lead. Although the Wolverines responded with one of their own shortly after a timeout, the deficit and momentum were out of reach ending the tournament with a two and two record. A scheduled friendly against the Jr. Sun Devils set for Tuesday evening was the last chance to prepare the Wolverines for what’s ahead in Irvine at the Pacific District Championships. Another eager team to get back at us from a game earlier in the year in which the final was 7-1, JSD came out with a hard forecheck and pressure on the puck dismantling our breakout, though the focus in practice of defensive zone coverage shined through for the Wolverines as the Sun Devils were shutout by the goalie tandem of Petty and Ganoung and the game ended with a 1-0 Wenatchee victory.
