Wild 12U Team Wins Two At Phoenix Cactus Cup
The most recent weekend for the Wenatchee Wild Development Teams belonged to the younger set, including a visit to the desert for the Wild 12-and-under program. The Wild 12U team returned to competition for the first time in 2023, winning two of its four games at the Cactus Cup in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert.
Tate Smith and Brayden Lee tallied goals in the opening game on Saturday, a 2-2 tie against the Colorado Rampage, and faced a Colorado Junior Eagles team on Sunday that jumped out to a quick lead on the way to its 5-1 victory. The 12U Wild found their stride in the final two games, though, getting two goals apiece from Alex Haglund and Riley Hansen in a 6-1 victory over the Junior Sun Devils on Sunday. Henry Vieth and Liam Janulewicz split time in net, seeing just eight total shots in the game. Janulewicz went the distance in the team's final game of the weekend, a 3-1 consolation win over the Rampage on Monday.
The Wenatchee Wolverines 14U team met up with the Team Alaska program at Eastern Washington University's Recreation Center ice arena for a three-game set, battling to a 1-1 draw in the opening game Saturday afternoon before dropping two decisions to Team Alaska on Monday. Team Alaska jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period of the afternoon contest before holding off the Wolverines for a 3-2 victory, while three second-period goals keyed a 4-1 Team Alaska win in the nightcap.
One key date on the schedule for this week involves the Wolves 18U squad, which will travel to Seattle to face the Northwest Stars in a decisive third game of its qualifying series for the state of Washington's spot in next month's USA Hockey Pacific District tournament in San Jose, California.
