Dave Fryer has been serving as the Commissioner of College Hockey East since 2013, following one term as the Associate Commissioner, three terms as Executive Assistant, and one term as a Special Events Coordinator. Dave was first formally involved with the conference during the 2004-05 season when he assisted with the CHE playoffs and annual all-star game. In 2005, he joined the top team at the California University of PA as an assistant coach, which got him deeply involved in College Hockey East. In his two seasons at Cal, he played a key role in the Vulcans’ rise to national prominence and the program's first CHE championship in 2007.
Dave then moved on to the ACHA Divison 1 ranks as a Head Coach with Duquesne University, where he guided the Dukes to the 2009 ACHA Men's D1 National Tournament and was a finalist for the D1 National Coach of the Year. Dave finished his coaching career at Robert Morris University, where he was named to the ACHA All-Star Game for a record fourth time. But he remained with the CHE throughout in administrative roles, so after retiring from the coaching ranks in 2012, Dave was prepared to take on the league's top administrative role and was voted into the office of Commissioner in the summer of 2013.
Dave's first major contribution to the CHE was his addition of a skills competition to the CHE All-Star Game, which was unveiled in 2006 in Johnstown and instantly became a yearly favorite among the players and the fans. Dave was also a vital component in the creation of the CHE-MET Showdown (now known as "The Classic") in the 2006-07 season, which increased the competitiveness and recognition of CHE teams in the Northeast, helping several member teams qualify for the ACHA Men's D3 National Tournaments on a yearly basis in subsequent years.
In his time as the Commissioner of the league, College Hockey East has expanded drastically under Dave's guidance by establishing new club hockey programs in the region and providing quality levels of play for existing teams. Dave reorganized the former CHA league under the CHE umbrella, creating additional men's divisions of competition to go with the existing Division 3 tier. Dave also established the CHE's first women's division in 2013, and Dave's leadership has grown that division in both quantity and quality, making it one of the biggest and best women's club hockey leagues in the nation.
Dave brings a wealth of hockey knowledge to the CHE's missions and operations through his involvement with many other areas of the sport. He has been the Assistant Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Director of Business Operations for Pittsburgh Ice Hockey Officiating (PIHO), the Operations Director for the Pittsburgh Elite Officiating Camps (PEOC), the Host/Scouting Director for America's Showcase, and the Assistant General Manager for Team Pittsburgh. He is an accomplished on-ice official and served for two seasons as the Referee-in-Chief for the Western Pennsylvania Hockey Officials Associations (WPHOA). Dave has been an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), working extensively in its hockey division to mentor young athletes.
Dave played his scholastic hockey in the suburbs of Pittsburgh at West Allegheny High School, where he founded the team and went on to become a team captain and league all-star. He then played his collegiate hockey at the University of Pittsburgh, during which time he was a 3-year captain, a team MVP, and twice led the team in scoring. During his playing time at Pitt, Dave helped form the University Hockey League (UHL), which was the first high-level collegiate hockey league comprised entirely of ACHA teams in the region.
Dave graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in psychology and has an extensive background working in Information Technology. He was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and resides in Oakdale, PA. Outside of hockey, Dave is an avid NASCAR fan, a season-ticket holder for both the Penguins and Pirates, and a member of the Allegheny Center Alliance Church.
Jamison Roth has held the role of Associate Commissioner of College Hockey East since 2011. He has been connected with the league from the time he began playing at California University of PA in 2002. In addition to serving various roles in the operations of the Cal hockey team during his playing days, Jamison contributed to the CHE as a member of its Board of Directors. In his time as Associate Commissioner, Jamison has played a key role in the CHE Select Team, serving as its General Manager. He was also a major contributor to the expansion of the College Hockey East men's divisions and the creation of the College Hockey East Women's Division.
As a player at Cal, Jamison was one of the most accomplished players in CHE history. He was the catalyst to the rise of the Vulcans hockey program, joining a team on the brink of extinction and transforming it into a National Champion. Jamison was consistently one of the top scorers in the CHE, posting an astonishing 49 goals his senior season and exiting as the team's all-time leader in games, goals, assists, points, power play goals, shorthanded goals, and game-winning goals. He was picked to the CHE All-Star Game five times and was the event's MVP in 2006. Jamison also collected 2 Kaleina Cup Championships and 2 CHE League Titles in his final 2 seasons as a player. His accomplishments extended off the ice during those years, as well, winning the league's GM of the Year Award in 2004 and Student-Athlete of the Year Award in 2007. Jamison's accomplishments as a student-athlete were so profound that College Hockey East named the Student-Athlete of the Year Award in his honor.
After earning a graduate degree from Cal in 2007, Jamison remained with the University as the Director of Club Sports and the General Manager of its hockey program. His vision for the Cal hockey team became a reality that season, when the Vulcans won the ACHA Division 3 National Championship. He also oversaw the growth of Cal's second team and the formation of Cal's women's team, both of whom went on to earn league championships.
Jamison played his youth hockey in his hometown of Erie, PA. He competed at the high school level for the McDowell Trojans, posting some of the best numbers in school history. He then spent a semester at Northern Michigan University before reaching his destiny at the California University of Pennsylvania. In addition to playing hockey at Cal, Jamison was a volunteer firefighter for the borough of California, an EMT for the local ambulance service, a dispatcher for a nearby police department, and the president of the Theta Xi fraternity.
Jamison married his wife Ashley in the summer of 2013, and the couple resides in the borough of California with their son Carter and dog Bella. He remains an EMT with the Brownsville Ambulance Service and a firefighter for the California Volunteer Fire Department. Jamison is a Penguins season ticket holder but still remains loyal to the Buffalo Bills in football.
Chuck Kuzniewski has been involved with CHE dating back to 1995, when he was the very first General Manager of the first hockey team Robert Morris College (now Robert Morris University). His most-significant contributions to the CHE came during his 10-year tenue as the league's Commissioner from 2002 to 2011. Kuzniewski was responsible for the league reaching national-acclaim within the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) by expanding its membership, solidifying its structure, raising its profile, and increasing its standards.
Kuzniewski sparked the initiative to change the name of the league from the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Hockey Association (WPCHA) to College Hockey East in 2002, reflecting the broader market of institutions within the league. He was then at the helm for the creation of the College Hockey Association (CHA) in 2004, which now operates as additional men's divisions under the CHE banner. The formation of this league opened up new opportunities for many colleges within the region to form and grow club hockey programs on campus. Kuzniewski fostered new relationships with the high school/amateur programs and instituted league by-laws to maintain accountability. He is also responsible for the incorporation of the ACHA into CHE, where the CHE was quickly recognized as a premier club league.
In honor of his contributions to College Hockey East, the league named their top championship award after Kuzniewski in 2014. The Kuzniewski Championship is now presented annually to the Men's Division 3 playoff champion in the form of a gold-plated belt. The belt was designed by Kuznewski himself and symbolizes his passion for hockey, professional wrestling, and high achievement.
Kuzniewski possesses a unique resume that includes broadcasting for various sports, owning a professional wrestling league called IWC, traveling the world as a show basketball announcer, working as a marketing manager for a golf course, and serving along side of former NHL Coach Kevin Constantine for youth hockey programs. His resume continues to grow as he currently works as the National Senior Associate Director of High School Programs for The Art Institutes.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Kuzniewski grew up in Bethel Park and currently resides in Scott Township, PA with his wife Dana and stepson Vinny. He is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his three nieces. Kuzniewski has three older sisters named Brenda, Kim, and Tracy, and he often visits his father Chuck to recall fond memories of his beloved mother Bonnie.
