On Monday July 6, the Durham Region Health Department will begin a new pilot program designed to help raise awareness of extreme heat and reduce the risk from heat illnesses. Please see the attached letter from Dr. R. J. Kyle Commissioner and Medical Officer of Health, to community partners introducing the new Durham Region: Heat Alert and Response System (HARS).
The key elements of this initiative are to:
· > Communicate heat warnings to local municipalities, community partners and the public,
· > Raise awareness about heat-related illness,
· > Promote protective actions to take before and during a heat event,
· > Identify, engage and support community partners who work with vulnerable populations that are at increased risk from heat and heat related illnesses, and
· > Work with local municipalities to improve and support their heat response plans.
The program will run from July 6th to September 30th, 2015.
