Victoria Mariners’ coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their respective teams. All coaches have played the game at either the professional or college level. Their focus is on developing the best baseball players they can, but equally important, in building successful and responsible young citizens.
The Victoria Mariners are pleased to announce the return of the coaching staff for our Premier and Junior Premier teams for 2015. Our program has had a long tradition of coaching stability. Mike Chewpoy returns as Manager of the Premier Mariners, his 12th year at the helm, looking to add his 3rd PBL Championship. Scott Smith will be back for his 6th year leading our perennially strong Junior Premier team which he lead to the JPBL Championship in 2012, and to the semi-finals in 2014. And new for 2015-16, the Bantam Premier Mariners have Matt Phillips at the helm.
Coach Chewpoy runs his team like a college program. He has high expectations for all of his players. He strives to prepare his players for the next level in their baseball careers. He believes in discipline, repetition, responsibility, focus, and mental toughness. Coach Chewpoy, has seen a number of his players drafted by or signed as free agents by MLB teams (Michael Saunders- Toronto, Bobby Scott- Toronto, Kyle Orr- LA, Dan Welch- Oakland, Kelly Norris-Jones- Toronto, Carson Vitale- Texas, Jalen Harris- Milwaukee, Jesse Hodges- Chicago), along with many others that have gone on toCollege and University baseball scholarships.
Coach Smith is considered a player’s coach. He is known for his ability to mold and develop athletes into baseball players. He focuses on a team approach to winning. Coach Scott is the consummate teacher. He helps players realize their potential, grooming them often from raw but talented athletes, into skilled and knowledgeable baseball players. Coach Scott prepares his players for the next stage, by making his players accountable to themselves and their teammates.
The Victoria Mariners Baseball Club prides itself on recruiting Mariners Alumni to coach withing the organization. Returning players know the philosophy of the club as the have experienced it first hand. With that, they bring a wealth of skill and knowledge from their college baseball experience. Simply said, our players return because they love the game and the Mariner name, and they have a strong desire to give back to the organization. This year (2015-16), the Bantam Premier Mariners are fortunate to have three former team members; Head Coach Matt Phillips, Assistant Coach Mike Turcotte, and Assistant Coach Austin Russell. Phillips, who has coached alongside Scott Smith for the last five years at the Junior Premier Level is more than ready to take command of his own squad. With Phillips, Turcotte who is has coached Junior Premier for the last two years and newcomer Austin Russell round out the Bantam Premier coaching staff.
The Mariners have some very talented assistant coaches, most of whom were Mariners players at one time, and several who have spent time playing at the collegiate level. In addition to our assistant coaches (Josh Campbell, Jeremy Campbell, Randy Holt – Premier; Brendan Orr, Connor Moughtin, Pat Christoff – Junior Premier; Mike Turcotte, Austin Russell - Bantam Premier), the Mariners have a tradition of bringing in guest coaches for off-season work, and during the season when graduate players return from college. All of our coaches have been a part of PBL or JPBL championships as a player, coach, or both.
