NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Newport designated hitter Andrew Daschbach (Stanford) and Mystic right-handed pitcher Kevin Chandler (UC Santa Barbara) have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their efforts on the diamond in Week 4 of the 2017 season.

Daschbach was in the top-three of nearly all major offensive categories last week after slugging a league-most nine hits while batting .474 on the week (9-19); he scored six runs  (2nd/NECBL) while drilling three doubles (T-3rd) and a home run and also added six RBIs (3rd/NECBL) to round out his impressive week at the plate. In that span, he also had a four-hit game that featured four runs and four RBIs in a huge Newport victory over Valley, and he finished the week with two more multi-hit outings.

The Stanford product has put together solid numbers all summer long, not just last week; entering Monday, Daschbach ranks third in the NECBL with a .380 batting average (19-50) and he has also scored 12 runs, driven in 13 more and has four doubles and four home runs in that span.

A rising sophomore at Stanford, Daschbach appeared in 26 games this past spring for the Cardinal, starting in 13. In limited at bats, he doubled four times and drove in three runs while drawing four walks.

Chandler made his first start for the reigning NECBL champions a memorable one after fanning seven and scattering three hits as part of a seven-inning shutout to notch his first victory of the summer. The Valencia, California, native and rising junior at UC Santa Barbara faced 23 batters and had little trouble in maneuvering through seven stellar innings in an eventual 3-0 Mystic victory over Plymouth.

Chandler now stands at 1-0 on the summer through two appearances (one start); he has not allowed a run of any kind in eight innings and has struck out nine compared to three hits allowed and no walks issued. His WHIP stands at a dazzling 0.38, and opponents have hit just .111 against him.

This past spring, Chandler was a valuable bullpen arm for the Gauchos while posting a 7.81 K/9 figure; in 21 relief appearances and 27-2/3 innings of work, he fanned 24 while allowing only 11 walks and 26 hits.

The NECBL congrats both players on their accomplishments.

Week 4 Honor Roll

Griffin Dey (Danbury/Yale) – Had a solid week at the plate with two home runs and seven RBIs, both one shy of the league leader for the week. He batted just under .400 with seven hits overall, as well as a double and five runs scored.

Giovanni Dingcong (Danbury/St. Thomas Aquinas) – His eight runs scored led the league last week while he batted .412 with seven hits in that span. Three of those hits were for extra bases (two doubles, one home run) while he also drew five walks. He had at least one hit in all five of Danbury’s games last week, helping the Westerners go 4-1.

Turner French (Mystic/St. Johns) – He made securing two saves look effortless after going six up and six down over two relief appearances last week, locking down a pair of Mystic victories and was the only reliever in the league to have more than one save last week.

Corey Joyce (New Bedford/North Carolina Central) – Last week’s Player of the Week put together another strong resume this week after producing at least one hit in all five games he played in. He batted .500 on the week altogether (7-14) with a league-most four doubles and also scored five runs.

Randell Kanemaru (Ocean State/Columbia) – He shared the league lead with nine hits on the week while batting .375 (9-24) with four runs scored, three doubles and one home run. Additionally, he drove in six more runs to help the South Division-leading Waves secure four more victories. He currently has a six-game hitting streak.

Greg Ludwig (Winnipesaukee/Ashland) – Led the league in both home runs (3) and RBIs (8) on the week, as all three of his hits were long balls, including a three-run homer and a solo shot in a win over Ocean State on June 29.

Benjamin Onyshko (Ocean State/Stetson) – His best start of the summer came on Sunday after he struck out eight over just five innings while working around a walk and two hits to earn his second straight victory.

Ashton Raines (Upper Valley/Bloomsburg) – Was dominant in a rain-shortened complete game victory, striking out five with no walks and only three hits yielded over five innings.

Paxton Stover (Upper Valley/Vanderbilt) – Made his season debut in style with five shutout innings over Sanford on June 28. Along the way, he fanned six and allowed just one hit while working around four walks.

Blake Whitney (North Adams/South Carolina Upstate) – Led the league again in strikeouts on the week with 19 over two starts and 12 innings. Fanned a season-high 12 batters as part of seven shutout innings in a no decision before taking a tough loss with only one run allowed over five innings that featured seven more strikeouts.
