OMHA BLACK SECURES SPOT IN SEMIFINAL WITH 5-1 WIN OVER ALLIANCE
LEE BOYADJIAN
KITCHENER – Hayden Fowler scored twice in the second period, including a short-handed goal as the game winner, leading Team OMHA Black over Team Alliance 5-1 Friday night at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup.
Cameron Warren opened the scoring in the first off a pretty passing play. Andrew Horsley, fending off two defencemen, flipped a pass to Tanner McEachern who saw Warren trailing through the slot. The shot beat Aidan Pitre high glove side, giving OMHA Black a 1-0 lead they would carry into the second.
In the middle frame, both of Fowler’s goals came on special teams. The first was on a powerplay, with players piled around the crease and Pitre down and out, OMHA Black peppered the goal with shots, before Fowler found the back of the net.
His second came on the penalty kill as Blake Murray stripped the defender of the puck and fed it to a streaking Fowler who buried for a 3-0 lead early in the second. Spencer Hazell added another powerplay goal to the special teams mix, for a 4-0 OMHA Black lead going into the third.
In the final frame, Alliance got on the board with Aidan Prueter leading a two-on-one. Prueter held onto it and beat Ethan Langevin shortside to make it 4-1. Warren would score his second of the game just over two minutes later, for a 5-1 OMHA Black final.
With the win, OMHA Black secures a spot in the semifinals and will wait on the final game from Day 2 to determine which team they will meet.
