The Flyers have officially announced that goalie Joseph Young has committed to play for the Division I Union College Dutchmen.

The Hanson, Mass. native verbally committed to the Dutchmen in 2012 while he was a member of the Boston Advantage Midget AAA team and intends to play at the beginning of the 2015 season. Young had previously played for the Boston Junior Bruins of the Eastern Junior Hockey League and the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League.

Young had been solid in the net all season for the Flyers. The 6’2”, 178 lb. goaltender played 35 games and finished the regular season with a .916 save percentage.

Young’s other NCAA offer came from Dartmouth College. The young goaltender cites the coaching staff as the main reason for his choosing Union College.

“They have a coach, Jason Tapp, who is their full time goalie coach and obviously for me that’s really appealing because not a lot of schools have full time goalie coaches. It will be nice to have someone there constantly to work with me and make me better. [Tapp] has a good track record of guys going on to [play professionally],” said Young.

Union College’s hockey program became Divison I in the 1991-1992 season. Since then, the Dutchmen have made four NCAA Tournament appearances (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) and have made two NCAA Frozen Four appearance (2012, 2014).

Young plans to stay another year with the Flyers before joining the Dutchmen. With his remaining year of eligibility, he hopes to greatly improve his skills.

“I want to develop consistency in my game and develop mental toughness. Getting stronger, continuing to improve as I move up the ranks,” Young stated.

A 2012 high school graduate, Young is looking forward to being a student again.

“Getting back into the school scene will be pretty nice. I've been out of school for two years so after a three year hiatus, it will be nice to get back to classes and pursue a major,” said Young, who is considering majors in business or physical therapy.

When asked what he was most looking forward to at Union, Young had a simple answer:

“Hockey; it’s all I can see myself doing.”
