PW2 National Cheer & Dance Recap (12-9-16)

A recap of the Pop Warner National Dance Championships on Friday, December 9 at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

How do you prepare for a performance while worrying about the safety of a teammate? Well, this team knows exactly how that feels.  The Arlington Seminoles Bantam team could not and would not let fear stop them. Hard work has gotten them this far and they plan to make it a stellar performance for their teammate.  Working with others in a team sport takes dedication, commitment and love.  This team has it all and has chosen to live life in love. “This group of girls depend on each other”, said Coach Karen.  Most of the girls have been cheering together since age 7.  Over-coming adversity is nothing new and with the few girls remaining, they plan to perform during Nationals by Any Means Necessary!

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: NEW ENGLAND

The New England Region spotlight team of the day is the Varsity Methuen Rangers from the Eastern Mass League.

This group of athletes are more than a team, they are a family. Head Coach Samantha has been with some of these athletes since they were Mitey Mites! All of the athletes on this team will be aging out of Pop Warner after this season, so they are giving this performance their all!

During their pep talk prior to performing Coach Samantha's words of wisdom were "to leave it all here and give it your all"!

Good luck to the Methuen Rangers! Way to go!

Burlington Pop Warner Pride

The power of “family” in creating a lasting bond has made the Burlington Patriots one of the super Cheer stories of this, and every, Pop Warner Super Bowl Week.

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Today's very special Pacific Northwest spotlight goes on the Almaden Mustangs Challenger cheer team. This is a brand new team to Almaden and currently has one girl, the coaches said their greatest challenge this season was recruiting, and really hope to bring more challengers to the program.

Head coach and mom Debbie Herena started this team because her daughter Alisia was always anxious to join in cheer watching her sister who is a JV cheerleader with Almaden.
Alisia cheered when she was six years old but the experience wasn't the same as Pop Warner. She wasn't able to perform or compete in the other program. Coming to Pop Warner Nationals was a dream the team and coaches had from last year. When Alisias sister came to Nationals on 2015 the coaches watched a challenger team persona and said her eyes just lit up and they knew what they needed to do.
Getting to Nationals was made so much easier by all of the support and help from he association who is 100% behind growing this team.
Coach Debbie says that his experience has helped her daughter so much, she used to be a lot more stubborn and is now learning how to work as a team and has learned so quickly.
Association cheer director Diana says that seeing Alisia stand up for herself has been her favorite part. Almaden had 4 JV cheerleaders join in on the mat to help and when they messed up her routine she let them know!
It was such an honor to spend time with this team, watching them perform on the mat was amazing and she never missed a beat! We hope to see much more growth and participation in this team for years to follow. Great job Almaden Mustang Challengers!

Pop Warner Pride: A Burlington Tradition!

Pride in accomplishment is not something that’s treated lightly among Pop Warner folks from Burlington , Massachusetts.  Nor is the power of “family” in creating a lasting bond that has made the Burlington Patriots one of the super Cheer stories of this, and every, Pop Warner Super Bowl Week.

As the winners of 23 Pop Warner National Championships, the first Pop Warner squad to be featured on the cover of CHEER Magazine, and the subject of the gritty, inspiring, acclaimed 2009 documentary “Blood, Sweat and Cheers” , the Burlington Patriots have become the gold standard in youth cheerleading.

But, how did all that tradition start?  During his 17 years as Burlington Association President, Dave Colangelo saw the town’s cheer program start small, but grow rapidly.  “We started to build up our cheer program in 1994,” Dave recalls. “ We had some success with a 5th place finish coming to Nationals. After that, the word began to spread. More girls signed up. And, the parents bought in.”

Then, five years later, the breakthrough, a first-ever Pop Warner National Championship for the Burlington Patriots in 1999. Dave recalls all the excitement that ensued. ”When we got home, the whole Burlington community gave us a ticket tape parade. Suddenly, the spirit was contagious. And, from there, the program grew and grew.”

Now, sixteen years later, with 23 Pop Warner National Championships in the trophy case for Burlington Patriots squads, the formula for success has become clear as day; especially when you talk with former Burlington Patriot Cheerleaders, many of whom have returned to serve as Jr. Coaches and Coaches “ You might not think a sport would have that much impact on your life,” reflects Burlington Jr. Coach Erika.  “ But, when you’re with your teammates for two hours, four nights a week, for months, you just become so close.”

And that “closeness” extends all the way up from cheerleader athletes to their adult coaches. As Cheer Coordinator Michelle  Arsenault knows , “When Dave Colangelo started the program, it was all about ‘family first.’ And, that’s the way it’s been ever since. Our coaches we have come back year-after-year. They start as young cheerleaders and they come back as student demonstrators, then jr. coaches and finally coaches, because they want to pass our tradition on from that same source of pride.”

Yep, Burlington is a community that cares deeply about their Pop Warner program and what it means to the growth of youth, adults, families and friends throughout this suburban Boston town. And, the “pass it forward” commitment of one generation of cheer champions to the next continues to define the Burlington tradition.

DUAL PARTICIPATION PILOT A SUCCESS!

In addition to Skills Game making a debut this year at the National Championship, another Pilot program was initiated this season…DUAL PARTICIPATION.  Ten teams from each Region were given the opportunity to roster as both a cheer team and a dance team.  Many of the Regions participated, but four Regions had some of their Dual Teams advance to the National Championship in both cheer and dance.

Participating as a dual team did not allow for any additional practice time.  This was the number one challenge that the coaches and coordinators encountered.  Developing a practice schedule that maximized being able to teach, learn and clean two completely separate routines.  For those of us who have coached Pop Warner, we know getting one routine done is a challenge in itself at times, how did they ever do two?

Coordinator Sophia Smith of the Wilmington Coastal Panthers from the Mid-South Region, she wanted to challenge her coaches and the athletes.  Sophia had two separate levels participate, Jr. Pee Wee and Varsity.  “We taught the words to the cheer while doing conditioning.  This way they were learning the cheer from the very beginning.  They began their season by devoting two days to cheer and one to dance.  The younger team definitely hard a harder time than the Varsity girls, but both teams adapted well.”

Cape Youth Storms from the Southeast Region also rostered two dual teams, Jr. Pee Wee and Varsity as well.  They took a slightly different approach, dedicating one day to cheer, one day to dance, and splitting the third day of practice.  Although they did not advance their cheer routines to the National Event, the dance routines did extremely well.  The coaching staff was split as well, some specialized in dance, and the others, dance.  Head Coach Michelle Mazur agreed, that it was a definite challenge to teach two separate routines, with the same amount of practice hours, but accepted the challenge and feels her team has benefitted and grown from the experience.

Patriot Youth Cheer and Dance is a new organization in the Mid-America.  They combined one cheer program with a program that had dance.  They did not have enough coaches for two teams, so they too decided to roster as a dual Pee Wee Team.  Head Coach Ebony Mills said her biggest challenge, “I never taught dance before.  I did research and found videos of other dance teams and decided on Janet Jackson. I felt I could relate to and teach that.”  Ebony split her practice days as Cape Youth did, one day cheer, one day dance, half and half on the third day.

For Monica Martinez of the San Antonio Wolverines of the Southwest Region, she too faced the same challenges the others teams did….balancing two routines.  Her Jr. Varsity will perform Friday with the PW2 teams.  They divided their practice time each evening of practice, half dance and half cheer.  The team placed first at both local and regional competition in their cheer and dance divisions.

The participants too accepted the challenge, and thrived.  Kylie Young of Cape Youth Hurricanes said “It was an interesting experience.  I have danced before, and cheered on the team last year.  It was an amazing experience and I would definitely want to do it again.”  Similar response from Dejah Cooper of the Varsity Wilmington Coastal Panthers “It was a lot more work, but no more practice time.  Competing is hard because you have to change the costumes and warm up for the second routine with not much time. But I would do it again!”

The dual participation has had rave response, with most all coaches agreeing they would definitely roster as dual again if given the opportunity.  Although they all agree more practice time would be beneficial, they found a way to make it work and provide an experience of a lifetime for their teams.

AWESOME JOB DUAL TEAMS! WAY TO ACCEPT A CHALLENGE!

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: EASTERN

The Eastern Region highlight team of the day is the Albany Falcons. Head Coach Patricka, Coordinator Kathy and assistant coaches Semone & Pam, have had the pleasure of coaching this tight knit group of girls who have been cheering with the Falcons for the past 2-8 years.  They are here competing at Nationals for the third time, placing 3rd and 2nd previously.

Collectively all these girls are not only athletes, many doing dual sports, but all are on the honor roll. They are extremely supportive to one another and self motivating, two key ingredients to success.
The road to Nationals consisted of drive and determination through coin drops, popcorn and food sales, raffle tickets and Go Fund Me fundraisers.
On and off the mat, there is one word describing this Falcon team.... Champions!

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: WESCON

Our three Wescon National’s Highlight teams for Friday, December 9, 2016 traveled all the way to Orlando from the Hawaiian Islands!  The Westside Eagles are a Junior Varsity PW2 Large team from the Big Island.  Their Head Coach Kristine Luta has been coaching for 4 years.  The biggest challenge they faced was fundraising to cover the cost of getting 16 girls and coaching staff to Florida.  She is most proud of how the team, that has come to be like family, were able to work together to qualify for Nationals.  The last time a team from their association came to Nationals was 2009.  Their team motto Play like Champions and they refer to themselves at Team B.A…. Bery Awesome!

Our 2nd Highlight team is the Kekaha Titans from Kauai, HI.  Michelle Chiba is their head coach and this is her 1st year as a head coach although she has been coaching cheer for 10 years.  Her mom has been with the program for over 30 years and is the one that persuaded Michelle to move from Oahu to Kauai to take over the team who was in need of some to accept the leadership role of this Junior Varsity PW2 team.  The hardest part on a personal level is being away from her husband.  Her favorite part of their routine is the dance that she choreographed herself.  Their team motto is West, West, just know and Bleed Blue!  Aloha Lisa!!

Wescon’s 3rd Highlight team of Friday is the Kailua Mustangs who are coached by Keahi Valdez.  They are also a Junior Varsity PW3 from Oahu as well.  Keahi has been coaching for four years and has had some of the girls since they were Tiny Mite.  The highlight of their season is being here in Orlando at Nationals.  She is eight months pregnant so that has provided unique challenges for her this season.  Their motto is Desire, Pride, Aloha!  Her favorite part of their routine is their stunts.

FRIDAY JR. REPORTER

Jr. Reporter: Elle O'Connor
Team: Chicago Lions (North West Elite Lions)
Head Coach: Kelli Van-Antwerp

Elle's team competed and placed first this week, in addition to achieving the highest score for choreography and overall high score.  She started cheering at the age of five, for Winchester Sachem Pop Warner. Elle's mom is the director and is the founder of this program seven years ago with the help of many cheer coaches.

This junior varsity, level two team competed for the second team in Disney, after being a program for three years. They are known as the Chicago Lions and reached their destination of Disney by plane and car and have had a blast visiting all of the parks in Florida. Some of the girls informed me that their favorite rides were found at Hollywood Studios and were keen riding Tower of Terror and Rock and Roller Coaster however, the thrilling adventure still lied in Magic Kingdom and Epcot, which includes a roller coaster of Expedition Everest. This team explained to me that their favorite characters were none other than the original Minnie, Mickey, and Bell, along with the more recent cartoon, Olaf. Their bows demonstrated their excitement towards cheer because of the flaked sparkles and uniqueness of the bows. They accommodated their bows to present the two colors of their uniforms, which is why the flyers wore red glistening bows, while the bases, back spots, bracers, etc. wore blue bows. As awards come around the corner, this team will get their results and I wish them luck for it to be a national title to take home to the city of Chicago.

FRIDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-SOUTH

The Mid South Spotlight team of the day is the Apex Cougars. Opening the final day of Competition as the first team to perform, they lived their motto, "hard work beats talent when talent  doesn't work hard".  Consisting of 21 girls, ages 10-13, this is the JR Varsity Med PW3 teams third time at nationals.  The Association has been 9 times since joining Pop Warner 14 years ago.  This team is the first DUAL team, competing as both a Dance and a Cheer squad.  They are taking home the third place trophy in Dance.  After a long day of competing yesterday, the coaches dressed up as snowmen to do bed checks last night.  As they get ready, they all chant "I believe that we will hit"  and we believe also.  Good Luck Apex Cougars.

CONGRATULATIONS PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Pacific Northwest Region is proud to spotlight Peninsula Pop Warners Pacifica Tigersharks JPW PW2 National Champions!

Head Coach Chelsea Rutledge has been with Pacifica 12 seasons, 8 as a cheerleader and 4 as a coach. The biggest challenge for her team has been having no local competition, not having the comparison and competition to push her team to work harder. Coach Chelsea said she had to keep pushing and motivating the girls to do better and better with nothing to compete against locally. The team definitely stepped up and showed incredible drive, commitment and motivation his season.
Besides being the National Champions this season the biggest highlight was being top scoring JPW's at local and regional competitions. The Tigersharks also received their highest score as an association this season. The parent support and sacrifice has been incredible.
Association cheer director Nicki Mercurio coached Chelsea and now they worked together to lead this team to success. Nicki was so proud of the girls, the harder the coaches pushed the harder they worked!
"This was our time to shine!" Said coach Chelsea. It definitely was! The team looked absolutely amazing out on that mat, after the team performed regional director Sandré Nelson smiled and said, "We've got ourselves a trophy!"
The best part about talking to coach Chelsea was her pride in this team. She said that even if he team would have come in dead last she would still be proud because she knew they did everything they were coached to do and wouldn't change a thing!
Tigersharks have definitely made their mark. Way to go Pacifica!! Representing the West Coast!

HUMAN INTEREST: NEW ENGLAND WILMINGTON WILDCAT HERO

Strong.  Selfless. Dedicated. All words used to describe a leader, a role model, a hero.  But they are just very few of the words to describe Deb Smith.  Anyone familiar with Wilmington Pop Warner is aware of the Association President running around the field with equipment and tending to all minor and major needs.  Deb Smith is a guiding hand to Wilmington Pop Warner, even as she faces the greatest burden of her life, She keeps going.

Deb initially started with Medford Pop Warner in 1996, where as a cheerleading coach, she captured the first National Championship Title for Medford. She then moved to the Wilmington area and began coaching at Wilmington Pop Warner.   In the last 19 years, she has coached cheerleading, 10 of those teams achieving a National Title.

Deb was diagnosed with breast cancer this past May.  While spotting a tumbler, she was hit which led to the diagnosis.  She began treatment a week later.  “It’s not curable, but if they can hold it off for years, then we’re in good shape” she says.  Throughout her treatment, Deb continues to coach and run the program as Association President.  “I’ve always worked with kids, it’s healthy for me to stay doing it. I just think you can’t change your whole life.  I couldn’t just shut down and not do things that I always do…I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”  At that is exactly what she is doing.  This week she traveled with her level 4 team to compete at the National Championship in Orlando.  They competed last evening in the live ESPN3 show.

Deb has touched the lives of so many kids over the years, that when word of her diagnosis spread, the community stepped up to repay her for all of her years of dedication to them and the program.  That community bond extended beyond Wilmington when a fellow Pop Warner family from Winchester reached out to the highly esteemed Dr. Harold Burnstein of the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute and was able to get Deb an appointment, something she had been unable to do on her own with his busy schedule.

Deb continues to focus on the good, and continues to do what she loves….Work with the youth of Wilmington.  Thank you Deb Smith for your dedication to Pop Warner.  You are the ultimate of volunteers.

Dance Recap (12-8-16)

A recap of the Pop Warner National Dance Championships on Thursday, December 8 at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

THURSDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-SOUTH

Here for the first time at the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Competition, the Cavalier Manor Spartans are the Mid-South Region Dance spotlight team of the day.  These 15 girls, ages 12-15, came from Portsmouth Virginia to compete in the Dance Theme Varsity Division.  This is their first year as a dual cheer/dance squad.  With the team motto "never underestimate the power of spirit" always in her mind, head coach, Chastity Garrett is so proud of how far they have come.  She wants them to know that "win or loose, they will always be my champions".  Since arriving in Disneyworld, they have visited the parks as a team and attended the Pop Warner Party at Animal Kingdom last night.  The favorite ride was Expedition Everest and they all loved the Mac n' Cheese that was served.  They realize their families had to sacrifice time and money in order for them to succeed and they are very grateful.  They also want to thank Darryl Tapp from the New Orleans Saints, who hails from Portsmouth VA, for his donation.

THURSDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: NEW ENGLAND

Today's New England Region spotlight team is the Bedford Jr. Bulldogs Jr. Varsity Dance team from New Hampshire Pop Warner.

The Bedford association was the first association in New Hampshire Pop Warner to participate in Dance, starting three years ago. They were also the first association from the New England region to send a Dance team to Nationals!

This team of 28 girls has worked tirelessly to perfect their routine. Themed as "Me and My Girls" this team has really become a family over the past four months!

Great performance today! Good luck! And way to go New England!

THURSDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHWEST

Holy Cross Knights Pom Pee Wee Dance Team are super excited about being at the 2016 Pop Warner Cheer/Dance Championship, they have come to Orlando the last two years and are hoping for great results after their performance today.
I interviewed Yayi Trejo and Madilyn Hernandez and both girls wanted to thank everyone back in San Antonio Pop Warner for all the support they have given to them throughout the great season.    I asked Yayi if she has anything that she wanted to say to her team mates, and she wanted everyone to do well and leave everything on the floor.....also interviewed Madilyn and I asked her if it was her first time flying to Orlando and she told me "No Sir I have been on the plane six times to get here."  Both girls are ready to perform so they can get it past them and see the results.    The Coaches were nervous, but excited for their kids...awesome team to interview.
Last question asked of Madilyn was would you rather be in school right now or here at Disney, her reply was that she would love to be here that's why she pushes her teammates throughout the season so they can be here every year....so long story short she rather be at Disney than school right now.

THURSDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

The famous quote by Mr. Phil Jackson, “The strength of the team is each member. The strength of each member is the team!” This quote is a great example for this team.  The Oceanway Buccaneers are a dual team from one of the newer associations in Jacksonville.  This cheerleading team accepted  the challenge and tried dance for the first time.  The Buccaneers pulled together to revise their routine after losing one of the seasoned members.  They had a great performance today.  The Southeast is so proud of you Oceanway!

Manchester Eagles (NH) Challenger Program Award

In one of the highlights of this entire week, a special recognition ceremony & award was presented to nine-year-old Pauly and his 7-year-old sister, Harlee Grace, of the Manchester Eagles Pop Warner Football & Spirit Challenger program. Both have an extremely rare, fatal disorder known as Canavan disease. Approximately 450 people in the world have Canavan Disease, and Pauly & Harlee Grace are the only two in the state of New Hampshire. Hear their story as told by their mother (Heidi), father (Paul) and Manchester "Buddy" Jasmine.

PW2 National Cheer & Dance Recap (12-7-16)

A recap of the day's events at the Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championships on Wednesday, December 7.

SKILL GAMES MAKES A DEBUT

If you were at the National Championships this week on Monday and Wednesday, then you were privy to a new addition to the Order of Performance ....YCADA SKILL GAMES! Skill Games is a two team cheerleading based sports competition match where two teams successfully execute preset routines on the competition surface.  These routines are based on YCADA level rules 1,2 and 3.  And divided into distinct quarters: Round 1 is Stunts/Pyramids, Round 2, Jumps/Tumpling and Round 3, Motions Dance.  The goal is for the team to score by executing the routine with fewer errors than their opponent.

The goal of the development of YCADA Skill Game is to provide an additional competitive outlet for teams to compete in head to head matchups which helps in the development of the fundamentals involved in the sport of cheerleading.  Skill Games is not meant to take the place of traditional cheerleading competitions and performances, but to be an additional competitive format to imrove the overall competitiveness of these teams.

That is the exact reason Head Coach Tracey Matthews from the Flagler Titans volunteered her team for this inaugural event. "I had many new cheerleaders to the team this year and they didn't do as well at competition as they would have liked.  Many of the girls are aging out this year and I wanted to give them the opportunity of the National Experience."

The start of Skill Games begins with a coin toss to determine initial possession within the Skill Game.  The referee will ask the Head Coach which has won possession which routine number they select to perform first.  Teams then have 20 seconds to take the floor.  At the referee's whistle, the music will begin. The scoring official confers to determine a winner of the round based on the number of skill errors by both teams.  The team with the least skill error deductions will winthe round.  If each team had the same number of errors, the round would end in a tie.

For the Flagler Titans, this was a positive experience, as they were declared the winners of Wednesday's Skill Games.

I am sure we will be seeing much more of the Skills Game Challenge in the future.

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-AMERICA

"Cheer like a beauty and train like a beast." That is the motto for the Naperville Chargers from the Mid-America Region, your Wednesday Region Spotlight team of the day.   Former Pop Warner and high school cheerleaders themselves, this coaching staff bring experience and energy to this team. They are upbeat and great with the girls.   Coach Elayna Pappas was Captain of the Dance Team at University of Illinois her Junior year.
The chargers have many team bonding events. One of their favorite...Coach Elayna getting engaged at one of their practices.
Ranging from age 8-11, this is a very close knit group of girls, "We are close friends and cheer each other on.  We love our coaches, they are amazing!"
The team has had a great experience at the National Championship, and is very excited to attend the Party at Animal Kingdom this evening.
Great Job Naperville!  Way to represent Mid-America!

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: EASTERN

The Eastern Region Highlight team of the day: Hightstown Rams Junior PeeWees out of New Jersey.  What a great bunch of girls along with their fantastic coaching staff: Steph, Stacy (without the "e"), Kathryn, Toni and Samara.  A huge shoutout to their mascot, who happens to be the little sister of the team.

All 16 girls are back with a vengeance as this is the Rams' second time making it to Nationals.
As the team approaches the reflection room, the coaches  pray to outlast and outshine as the girls sparkle on the mat! They tell the girls to have fun, because it was the fun they had throughout the season that got them this far.
Getting to Nationals is  not only the hard work put forth by the girls on the squad and the effort and forever guidance by the coaches, but it's about the support and love by the family behind the team. We are proud to have Hightstown Rams as part of the Eastern Region family.

REGION INTEREST STORY: EASTERN

Colleen Serio has been involved with the Riverside Bulldogs since 1993 – coaching all levels. But when she moved down to coach the Tiny Mites - she decided to buy a Build a Bear as the team mascot.  Paige Marie was born on August 19, 2006.  Paige has been to all of the games for the last ten years as well as all competitions.  This is her seventh year at Nationals.  She was a National Champ in 2010 with the Varsity team and today she proudly placed 3rd with the Jr. Pee Wee team.

Her uniform matches the team and she also has her own Pop Warner Certification Card.  She travels with Colleen in her car seat – so she stays safe.  Pop Warner’s number one goal is safety.  Everyone who knows the Riverside Bulldogs, knows who Paige is.

The girls that were Tiny Mites in 2006 – are now in high school, but still remember her.  Paige is a great support – she takes away all the butterflies before competitions.

On November 5, 2016, Colleen’s daughter Valeri (former Bulldog Varsity Coach) was married.  Valeri bought Paige a Bridesmaid dress.  Our Vice President, Shelley Hays was on babysitting duty and Paige sat with her at the wedding.

In 2015, Colleen helped coach the Tiny Mites again and a whole new generation has met her.  Last year at Nationals – some of the Tiny Mites were in attendance so we took a photo with Paige.  We are starting a tradition and will take a photo with these girls each year we are at Nationals.

Paige is everyone’s little sister and welcomes them to the Bulldog Family.  Riverside Bulldogs are a Family of Champions & Rise as One and that’s what Pop Warner is – FAMILY!

WEDNESDQAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: WESCON

Our Wednesday Highlight team of the day is the La Costa Canyon PW2 medium team from the Palomar League.  Their Head Coach is Kristin Gaspar and she has been coaching for 3 years. A third of her team are brand new to the sport.  Kristin is the Mayor of Encinitas, CA and just this year was elected as a County Supervisor of district 3 in San Diego, CA. So as one would imagine the biggest challenge was balancing her time between coaching and running an election while transitioning from a small group of 8 to a medium sized team of 19.
With so many new girls to cheerleading she really needed to focus on teaching them the fundamentals to get them all to level 2 in just a short period of time.  She couldn’t have done it without her amazing coaching staff and dedicated parents.  The highlight of the season was watching their progress.  They recorded their competition routine from day one and it has been a real treat to see how much the girls have developed and grown to make it to the National stage!

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-SOUTH

The Mid-South Region spotlight team for Wednesday is the Kings Mountain Mountaineers Pee Wee from Kings Mountain, North Carolina!

This year marks the first time that the Kings Mountain association has sent a cheerleading team to the National Championships! This team of 6 girls is "one little team with one big dream!"

Their coaches have always told them to "never doubt themselves" and that is exactly what this team has done!

Amazing performance by these ladies! Good luck! And don't forget, "Hands on hips, smiles on lips! Let's go Mounties!"

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: NEW ENGLAND

The Oxford Wolverines made history today as they competed for the first time as a Pop Warner Team.  Taking the mat in the Jr. Pee Wee PW2 Medium Division, this 24 strong group of 8-10 year olds wear the color of champions, blue and white.

Their team motto is "it's our time to shine" and Coordinator, Marie Kashuba, tells them "for 2-1/2 minutes the beacon is bright".

The association is a young 5 years old,  joining Pop Warner this year.  They are very happy with their decision and are extremely grateful for the warm welcome they have received from everyone involved.

As the coaches greet the team after their performance, Coach Kashuba claims  "this is the best Jr. Pee Wee Team Oxford has ever had."  We agree.

WEDNESDAY JR. REPORTER

Jr. Reporter: Eden Depekary
Team: Watertown Indians
Head Coach: Tina

Eden Depekary lives in Warren , NJ with her family. She started cheering with Pop Warner when she was 5 years old.  She has competed at this same national competition three times and won first place once and second place twice. Her favorite part of cheer was competing and being able to show everything that they worked so hard for, and Disney was always her favorite competition. She says being a cheerleader gave her focus, friendship and turned her into a team player. I am junior coach and my mom is the commissioner of the cheer program Watchung Hills Wolverines.

I had the opportunity today of interviewing the Watertown Indians from Connecticut. The girls on the team were very energetic and excited to be interviewed. The Indians were Pee Wee level two cheerleaders’ age’s nine to twelve. The girls seemed very happy with their performance and told me that they felt confident and were anxious for awards. Their head coach Tina has been coaching for nine years and all the girls said how great of a coach she was. This was the Watertown Indians third time coming to the national competition at Disney World. The girls arrived on Sunday and had been going to the parks every day. The cheerleaders had went to Animal kingdom, Hollywood studios, and Magic Kingdom. Their favorite rides were Splash Mountain, Expedition Everest, and Space Mountain. All the cheerleaders’ favorite characters were Goofy, Stitch, Mickey, and Ariel. They all seemed to love how they got to have fun in the parks all day and also be able to cheer and compete. Overall the Watertown Indian cheerleaders were fun and exciting girls and I hope they do well in today’s competition.

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

The Association Cheer and Dance Coordinator (ACDC) is an important role on a leadership team.  That is the person who works to recruit and retain coaches.  For the Flagler Titans, the ACDC (Kim) stepped into the role of head coach during nationals because Coach Deanelle was unable to make it.  Leadership roles also mean that you have to be prepared to make tough coaching decisions when warranted.  This team, which was originally two, was combined after a coaching absence left one without anyone to guide them.  For this team, the blending turned out to be the best thing that could have happened for the girls.  The energy of one team mixed with the support of the other.  They complemented each other.  I guess you could say it was a match made in heaven.  The team support was amplified by their assistant coach, who has worked with the girls and was here for nationals, despite juggling all that goes along with the rigors of an expectant mother of 8 months.  She refused to let them come to nationals without their good luck charm which is the performance belly rub.  What a way to start and end the day!

WEDNESDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Celebrating their 50 year anniversary the PW Mountain View Marauders came to nationals to represent the Pacific Northwest Region, and Peninsula Pop Warner, out of California.

Coach Magie Cordero has been coaching for 36 years. In addition to coaching Magie is also the president of the association, which can be incredibly challenging. Some of the athletes in this program are third generation with the Marauders. Coach Magie says they have coaches who's kids come back to coach and grandkids are now in the program. They pride themselves on being a family and watching kids grow and become coaches themselves.
The core group of this team has been together for 3 years and were national champions as first year cheerleaders. This season they lost some key teammates who were flyers and bases. The coaches worked with this team and taught most of them new positions. This team amazingly started this season with only one girl tumbling and came a long way with their team learning how to tumble.
As the team and coaches were separated backstage before the performance it was very heartwarming to see every coach hug every child and tell them how proud they were of them.
Once on the mat this team showed the pride and accomplishment of a 50 year tradition. Great job ladies!

Their team motto is “One Team, One Dream.” They had a great time traveling to the Regional Competition in Arizona where their performance completely wowed the fans as they hit everything perfectly!  Her favorite part of their routine is the ending pyramid.  After every football game the girls get together with the football team and recite a special prayer.  They also recite that same prayer before taking the mat at every competition.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-SOUTH

Introducing the Mara Colts from Matthews, NC.  Consisting of nine young ladies, these athletes are the first team from their association to make it to Nationals.

Arriving a few days early, some girls have already been to all four parks in Disney World.  They would like to thank all the parents and everyone involved in Mara Colts Pop Warner for always supporting the kids.  They would not be here without them.

Hey all you Mara fans, get up and clap your hands.  Good Luck!  You are already winners!

TUESDAY AFTERNOON REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

Your Southeast Region Spotlight team of the day is the Jupiter Mustangs from the Treasure Coast League. If you had to survey a group of people to determine what was the most important thing in their lives the majority would say is FAMILY.  Well, for this team the answer will be the same.  They value this team working and functioning as a family.  The coach adores the fact that her team appreciates all the time spent together and not just preparing for competition. “In youth sports, roles models and values are also important,” said the coaches. The core value exhibited by this is love.  They get to see the love and support of a father and mother who are a part of the coaching staff.  This team has bonded, and in turn performs as one unit, one family.

Congratulations to the JUPITER MUSTANGS as they have acheived the title of NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, and they earned it, as a FAMILY.

Great Job Mustangs, the Southeast is so proud of you!

TUESDAY MORNING REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-AMERICA

Fort Osage Indians JPW Cheer Team - One Team One Dream - that's their motto!!!
All their hard work and determination, from both the participants and coaches, have paid off and they made it to the National Championships!  The coaches are very involved with the girls and their families.  They spend time swimming, going to world of fun, hair parties, etc.  The girls are very close to the coaches, and one of the coaches is named "Candy".  The girls decide to name all of their coaches after candy, such as snickers, starbucks, skittles, etc.

The girls have been very busy while here in Disney.   They are staying at All Star Music and heading over to Magic Kingdom after their performance today.  Their goal for next year is to become a Level 2 team.  The Coaches are also thinking about possibly having year round cheer to keep the girls involved and fine tune their skills.
The coaches have been with the girls for the past 5 years, as far back as Mitey Mites.
GOOD LUCK FORT OSAGE!

TUESDAY MORNING REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

The Melbourne Ducks PW cheer squad worked hard to get to where they wanted to be and that is right here at Disney competing in the National Cheer & Dance Competition. After losing some girls to injuries, this team remained diligent in working hard to be here today. "These girls are an inspiration and I am so proud of them," said Coach Kim.The love and true feelings for the girls shows on her face when you ask  her about the team. Through all of the adversities the team has experienced this season, the remaining girls stayed true to the brand and were even more motivated to do their best. As one of the newer leagues in the Southeast Region, the Ducks commitment to the value of teamwork showed in their performance. The girls are super excited and the coaches functioned as only a seasoned staff could considering the freshness of their league.  Kudos and three cheers for the Melbourne Ducks. GO DUCK NATION!

TUESDAY MORNING REGION SPOTLIGHT: WESCON

The South Coast Red Tritons are a Pee Wee PW1 medium team out of South Orange County, California.  Jen Rector is their Head Coach and has been coaching with this team for 4 years since they were JPW.  Her team was the first cheer squad ever for the Association.  This year’s squad of 24 girls is her largest one yet and provided the challenge of putting together a routine that would highlight each one and their unique talents.  More than half of 24 girls are cheering for the first time but the other half made it to Nationals last year where they placed 5th in their division.  She also have a cheerleading that is hearing impaired and she assigned her a buddy to assist her throughout the season.
Their team motto is “Unstoppable” but just not on the mat, but in all areas of their personal life as well.  She is most proud of their three 1 foot prep heel  stretches that connect to a shoulder sit because it takes the whole team coming together to make it hit!  Before they took the mat she reminded them to use their man voices and lady smiles!

TUESDAY MORNING REGION SPOTLIGHT: PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Today's Pacific Northwest Region spotlight team is the Douglas Tigers from the Sagebrush league in Nevada. Head coach Kelly White says this was a squad who always gave 100% and came to every game, and competition prepared and spirited!

This team overcame one of their biggest obstacles while preparing for Nationals. With about one week left they learned 4 girls can no longer travel, they formed new stunts and rearranged their routine. There was nothing stopping this team!
Before taking the stage the girls had a couple minutes to talk to their coaches and prepare to take he stage. At this time Coach Kelly asked the girls what each of their teammates brought with them on this trip that they love and is special to them. The whole squad named off each other's special items, Coach Kelly then explained to all of them how much they all care about each other and listen to each other so much that they knew exactly what they had packed as their special item.
This team showed so much care and support for one another, and that's what paved their road to nationals.

TUESDAY MORNING REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHWEST

Your Tuesday morning Southwest Region Spotlight team is the Southeast Dallas Wolverines.  The cheerleaders from the Wolverines are excited and fired up to perform here at the National Championship.   I interviewed Tristen and this was her first time to Disney and the National Championship, she said was nervous, but her faith in her team will make it all better.    She closed by saying One Team, One Dream, We are the Wolverines.......

Their first appearance at the National Event was definitely a memorable one.  During their performance, the music didn't start when it should have.  However...all their hard work and preparation paid off when they conitiued on and performed flawlessly!

Their team motto is "Win together, lose together. Either way, we stick together! WEI! JPW!"

PW3 National Cheer & Dance Recap (12-5-16)

A recap of the day's events at the Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championships on Monday, December 5.

MONDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: EASTERN

Your Monday Spotlight team of the day is the Iselin Giants Junior Varsity medium PW3. What an awesome group of girls. My day started with them getting fired up as they were waiting to get checked in. We then went to the warm up mats stretched out and had a wonderful warmup. We proceeded to the quiet room and reflected on what the girls have accomplished to get to Nationals-remember to have fun and leave it on the mat! That is just what they did, thereby taking second place. I am so very proud of these girls as they persevered  through their trials and tribulations to attain their goals. Congratulations Giants-you are AMAZING!

MONDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: WESCON

The Gilbert Chandler Bruisers are a Junior Varsity PW3 Large team out of Arizona.  Their Head Coach Rita Keane has been coaching for 15 years.  She began her coaching career in New Jersey before relocating to Arizona.  The biggest challenge is also what Rita is most proud of; having 24 girls come together to work hard to get to the National event.  More than half of 24 girls are cheering for the first time ever and to get them to a level 3 competitive squad is very impressive.  She has done a lot of team bonding exercises throughout the season to teach them to be more like sisters than just teammates.
Rita credits her amazing coaches who have helped with all aspects, personal and professional, in helping get these girls to Orlando.  She is most proud of their tumbling which has come a very long way!  Their team motto is “I believe that we will win!”  But what really matters most is that the girls have fun.  She believes they are already winners just by being here!

MONDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

The Monday Region Spotlight team of the day is the AVALON WOLVES from the Mid-Florida League right here in Orlando.  This team lost a valuable flyer just two weeks ago to an injury and has replaced with a brand new flyer.  It is amazing how this team has come together to support one another.  They had an amazing performance and placed third in the PW3 Large Division, a very competitive division.

Avalon has always been very active with the community and encouraging the girls to engage with community service projects to allow them to help those less fortunate.

Congratulations AVALON!!!  You Make Southeast Proud!!!  WE ARE....AVALON!

HUMAN INTEREST STORY: SOUTHEAST

For 12 year old Brianna Guin, staying active is really not a problem. She plays the trumpet in the band at her school, enjoys doing arts and crafts, sings, acts, is a cheerleader, all while enrolled in advanced and gifted classes.
But don't think for one minute that this petite little beauty just dabbles in her activities. She has skipped a level of band at school and is part of the top band, she is a flyer for the North Port Mustangs from the Peace River Conference making their third appearance in a row here at the National Championship, all while maintaining her grades at all A's and B's; although she does admit to having one high C in math, "Its not my best subject".
She also has a Talent Resume that only some adults dream of let alone a seventh grader. But the most impressive attribute Brianna has...her humbleness.
Brianna's parents are both musically inclined... Dad plays many instruments, including the trumpet. And mom plays the flute and Brianna says "I think my mom can sing , but she doesn't think so."  Brianna has two brothers, one of which sings. "I have been singing ever since I can remember. Everyone told me how good I was so my parents starting sending some videos out and I did a few auditions."
At the young age of 8, Brianna had her first performance at the Venice Theater in "Christmas Carol". She has been in multiple school plays and concerts, sang the National Anthem at the North Port Mustangs football games for the past four seasons, and made several more appearances at the Venice Theater. But the videos and auditions paid off in March of 2015 when Brianna was invited to sing the National Anthem at the Minnesota Twins MLB game. Since that time, she has performed at many more baseball games and has sang the National Anthem at the Peace River Cheer Competition as well as the Southeast Region Cheer and Dance Championships.
Brianna's favorite song to sing is "The Climb" by Mylie Cyrus.  Mariah Carey is her favorite artist "She has beautiful tone and is just an amazing singer."  When asked what venue is on her bucket list to perform at....the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. "Dallas is my favorite football team and I love the stadium. It is not just a stadium, but a work of art."
With all of her singing commitments, Brianna says there are times she will have to leave a performance and change clothes in the car so she can get to practice with her team. "Cheerleading is very important to me. My favorite part is stunting. It is so fun flying. Cheerleading is misunderstood. Many don't realize how difficult a sport it is."
Of course Brianna would love to be a singer when she grows up, but her back up plan is to be a veterinarian. I am pretty sure you will be able to be anything you put your mind to Brianna.....

Head coach Rachel Fiske and assistant coach/ACDC Jene Miller were extremely excited and enthusiastic about their team.
North Creek is a brand new association to Pop Warner in Seattle with the closest team about three hours away. It is such a fantastic accomplishment for this team to make it to Nationals in their first year with Pop Warner.
Jene talked about how exciting it was to have such a great program to use to feed talented athletes into a brand new high school being built in their area.
Cheerleader Kayleen celebrated her birthday out on that mat today and said it was so fun to be able to do so.
This team is all about great new beginnings and are doing a fantastic job! Welcome to Pop Warner North Creek!!

The team I got to report for 2016 Pop Warner Nationals was the Triton Cheer Team all the way from California. This team was PW1 medium Pee Wee Team, they perform tomorrow, December 6th. When I came to talk to them they were just heading to the practice mats. Triton was so excited to have made it this far with after placing 1st with a 95.3% at regionals in Arizona. Their favorite stunt to show off was their 1 foot step ups. Triton claims they know they will do great because they have their good luck charm which is pixie dust with them, their coach put sparkles on them and ever since then they hit everything. Good luck Triton cheer preforming tomorrow, remember those smiles and always keep your faith, trust and pixie dust.

The team I got to interview today was the New Britain Raiders, all the way from Connecticut. When I stopped to talk to them they had just gotten off the mat from competing and were very excited and happy with their performance. Majority of their team favored the dance because of how fun it was to perform except for one who loved to show of her scorpion. This group of fifth to eighth grade cheerleaders are staying at Disney’s All Star Resort. They were very impressed, however they are sad to leave it all on Thursday and have to go home. We wish them the best of luck at the award ceremony and any future years cheering with Pop warner.

The Mid South Region spotlight team is the Cleveland Rams.  They are one of seven cheerleading squads representing their hometown of Clayton, NC.
Their head coach, Jennifer Robbins, has given the team the moto "BURN THE BOATS".  Like Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, she wants the team know that they have no opportunity to retreat and to fight with everything they have.
There are 17 athletes total, 16 young ladies and one young man.  After losing several teammates this year, the coaches are proud of how they have all come together.  The athletes would like the coaching staff and their parents to know that they "Love you and Thank you for supporting us always".
"The best is back in town" and we salute the Cleveland Rams Varsity PW3 Medium Team.  Best of luck!  You represent the Mid-South well!

SATURDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: SOUTHEAST

Your Southeast Region Spotlight team of the today is the Inverness Storm from the Timucua League.  There are 32 very spirited, spunky cheerleaders that make up this team under the direction of Head Coach Lisa Hilberer, and Coordinator Angie Stanton.  A staff of ten assist with this very large Mitey Mite team.  For most of these girls, this is their time to the National Cheer and Dance Championships. But you would never have known....Their enthusiasm and energy was contagious, and their smiles and confidence, that of an experienced team.

"Be Loud, Be Proud, and use your man voice" their coaches tell them, "We are so Proud of all of you, Don't be nervous, you'll be great".  When asked what is most impressive about the team, Coordinator Angie proudly responds "Their huge heart for each other.  One of their team mates is having a medical challange and unable to participate, and the team has come together and been so suppotive of her."

When asked what their favorite part of the routine is, some respond the dance, some stunts, and others, the tumbling.  They even have encorporated use of signs with this young team.  Their is no double that this will be a team to watch out for when they advance to the next level.  Awesome Job Inverness Storm!.  The Southeast is so very Proud of You!!

SATURDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Hollister Vikings MM cheer from the Pacific Northwest Region, traveled to Florida all the way from California and these girls just left it all on the mat!!! Coach Christine Delreal was a Hollister Viking herself for 7 seasons as a young girl, and said she wanted her daughter to experience the values that come from Pop Warner. The scholastic importance, with the cheerleading, was the biggest inspiration for Christine to choose Pop Warner Little Scholars.
Coach Christine said that the most important thing the girls showed this year was respect and encouragement for one another. Each time one of the girls would attempt a new task, the team would ban together and cheer her on.
The girls range in age from 7-9 and showed so much encouragement for one another. This team started with only 4 girls knowing how to cartwheel and no other tumbling, to by the end of the season, every girl on the team could tumble.
It was my pleasure to watch these beauties perform on the mat today, way to go Hollister!

SATURDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: EASTERN

The Conestoga Generals Mitey Mite Cheer team  traveled from Brwyn Pennsylvania to exhibit today for the first time at the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Champtionship.
Traveling with them is Head Coach Sheri Griffiths.  The girls are very excited to get on the mat and show everyone how they have learned to stunt and tumble.  The team consists of 25 girls ages 7-10,  only 12 were able to travel to perform today.  Fabulous job from the Conestoga Generals today!! The town of Brwyn is very proud of you!

SATURDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-SOUTH

I had the pleasure of following the Cleveland Rams from the Mid-South Region.  This team had the opportunity to perform twice today, once for their cheer routine and again with their dance routine.  Cleveland Rams participated in the Dual Team pilot program, which allows a team to roster themselves as cheer and dance .  Their cheer routine was sharp and spirited, and when they returned to the dance floor and it was  all about Star Wars.  The girls had a lot of energy for both routines, considering there was not much time between performances.  There are 5 girls on the team and two coaches.  The girls said they enjoy the dance part because they get to wear a costume.  Way to make the Mis-South proud ladies!!

SATURDAY REGION SPOTLIGHT: MID-AMERICA

Tri Town Raiderettes are coached by Robyn and her staff. Coach Robyn enjoys working with Pop Warner and sharing her 17 years of dance experience. During football season, you will find these girls on the Pop Warner field, but off off season, they are in the dance studio taking classes and preparing for recitals.

Coach Robyn integrates much team building exercises with her teams,to help the team bond and work better together.  One of their team building events was having the girls play flag football.  Her emphasis is not just on dance, but tumbling as well.  Tri Town Raiderettes have had a strong presence at the National Cheer and Dance Championships for many years, and many of these girls have older sisters in the program to look up to.

Their dance theme this year is "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince.  Awesome job Tri Town!!!  It is always a pleasure watching you shine!
