Rules and Divisional Placement

A DIVISION

  • The A division is an open aged division whose teams and players wish to play a high level of hockey with some game rules in use. The below is a sample of the rules that the “A” Division will use.

 

  • Games will consist of a 2 minute warm-up and three 15 minute running time periods
  • Games will be played without icing and off-side calls unless otherwise agreed upon by both coaches and the ref prior to the start of the game
  • Games will be played with 5 skaters and a goaltender
  • No coaches will be permitted on the ice (exceptions may be granted for safety purposes)
  • Players to change on the fly (no buzzer)
  • Score will be kept (unless otherwise agreed upon by all coaches and refs)
  • Penalties will result in a penalty shot. The penalty shot must be taken by the player who was interfered with, if possible. In addition to the penalty shot, a 2 minute penalty will be served in the penalty box by the offending player if the referee or player’s coach thinks they should.
  • Fighting is prohibited. Any player issued a fighting penalty will be suspended for the balance of the tournament. The player’s coach may also be suspended for the balance of the tournament pending a discipline and appeals committee review.
  • Full rules will be provided closer to the tournament
  • Sportsmanship, fair play and fun is the primary objective of this tournament

 

 

 

B DIVISION

 

The “B” Division is an open aged division intended for teams whose players can skate, pass and shoot at a reasonable level but does not play full hockey rules and requires a buzzer to change. The below is a sample of the rules that the “B” Division will use.

 

  • Games will consist of a 2 minute warm-up and 2, 20 minute running time periods
  • Games will be played with 5 skaters and a goaltender
  • Teams may also play with 1-2 “roamers” pending mutual agreement between opposing coaches in advance of the start of the game
  • Coaches/mentors are permitted on the ice but are not to interfere with the play
  • Modified hockey rules will be used in this division. No off-sides or icing will be called.
  • A 3 minute horn will be used to allow players to change lines
  • Score will be kept (score will be kept as close as possible throughout play, both teams win unless otherwise agreed upon by all coaches and refs)
  • Coaches should make special efforts to ensure any “A” caliber player playing in a “B” game not dominate the game at the expense of the other players.
  • Coaches should attempt to ensure similar skilled and/or aged players are on the ice at the same time
  • Penalties will result in a penalty shot. The penalty shot must be taken by the player who the penalty occurred on, if possible. In addition to the penalty shot, a 2 minute penalty will be served in the penalty box by the offending player if the referee or player’s coach believes that it is warranted. At no time will any team serving a penalty have less than 5 skaters on the ice
  • Extra penalty shots can be awarded by the referee to help improve the game and give some players a chance to shoot on net (with coaches’ consent)
  • Full rules will be provided closer to the tournament
  • Sportsmanship, fair play and fun is the primary objective of this tournament

 

 

 

C DIVISION

 

The “C” Division is intended for teams whose players require more assistance on the ice and/or are relatively new to hockey. This division will not play full hockey rules (no icing and off-sides) and requires a buzzer to change. The below is a sample of the rules that the “C” Division will use.

 

  • Games will consist of a 2 minute warm-up and three 15 minute running time periods
  • Games will be played with 5 skaters and a goaltender
  • Teams may also play with 2 or more “roamers” pending mutual agreement between opposing coaches in advance of the start of the game
  • Coaches/mentors are permitted on the ice (minimal assistance in the play is allowed only with coaches’ consent)
  • Modified hockey rules will be used in this division. No off-sides or icing will be called.
  • A 3 minute horn will be used to allow players to change
  • Scoreboard will be utilized but each team awarded a goal when one team scores (actual score may be kept with coaches’ agreement)
  • Coaches should make special efforts to ensure any “B” caliber player playing in a “C” game not dominate the game at the expense of the other players.
  • Coaches should attempt to ensure similar skilled and/or aged players are on the ice at the same time
  • Penalties will result in a penalty shot. The penalty shot may be taken by any player
  • Extra penalty shots can be awarded by the referee to help improve the game and give some players a chance to shoot on net (with coaches’ consent)
  • Full rules will be provided closer to the tournament

MIXED DIVISION

 

The “Mixed” Division is an open-aged division whose teams feature a mix of A, B and C players on the team. This division will not play full hockey rules (no icing and off-sides) and will utilize a buzzer to change. The below is a sample of the rules that the “Mixed” Division will use.

 

  • Games will consist of a 2 minute warm-up and three 15 minute running time periods
  • Games will be played with 5 skaters and a goaltender
  • Coaches should attempt to ensure similar skilled and/or aged players are on the ice at the same time (top line versus top line, 2nd line versus 2nd line, etc).
  • Teams may also play with 1-2 “roamers” for certain lines pending mutual agreement between opposing coaches in advance of the start of the game
  • Two (2) coaches/mentors are permitted on the ice but are not to interfere with the play
  • Modified hockey rules will be used in this division. No off-sides or icing will be called.
  • A 3 minute horn will be used to allow players to change
  • Score will be kept (maximum 3 goal difference on scoreboard)
  • Penalties will result in a penalty shot. The penalty shot must be taken by the player who the penalty occurred on, if possible. In addition to the penalty shot, a 2 minute penalty will be served in the penalty box by the offending player if the referee or player’s coach believes that it is warranted. At no time will any team serving a penalty have less than 5 skaters on the ice
