In 2016, the Midwestern Junior C Hockey League joined the other seven Junior C leagues in the Ontario Hockey Association to create the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and was renamed the Doherty Division. The Doherty Division is part of the South Conference along with the Bloomfield Division.
The Doherty Division was named after Pat Doherty who was instrumental in the game of hockey in the OHA and across Canada.
The Midwestern Junior C Hockey League (MWJCHL) formed in the summer of 2013 following the realignment of the overlapping Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League (SOJHL) and Niagara & District Junior C Hockey League (NDJCHL). The eastern most teams from the SOJHL joined the western most teams of the NDJCHL to form the new MWJCHL. The remaining SOJHL teams continued to play in the SOJHL and are now the Yeck Division in the PJHL West Conference, while the remaining NDJCHL teams are now part of the Bloomfield Division in the PJHL South Conference.
