
Pat Doherty was born in Campbellford, Ontario in 1928 and moved to Kitchener in 1955. He has served as coach, manager and president of the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association, was founding president of the Hub All-Star League (1972), manager of the Kitchener Ranger B's for two years and head instructor of the Don Hayes Hockey School.
Doherty wrote a manual for hockey coaches and instructors and an organizational manual (1973) which are both used across Canada. He became chairman of the Ontario Hockey Association Board of Directors in 1982 and was the first president of the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario in 1984.
A former teacher at Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Jerome's High School, he joined the Waterloo County Separate School Board in 1968, serving as a consultant and safety officer until his retirement in 1989.
His thirty-five years' involvement with minor hockey was recognized with the Special Achievement Award by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation in 1985. In 1987 Pat was awarded the OHA Gold Stick Award, and was also named an OHA Life Member. His numerous other recognition awards include the individual Kitchener Sports Award (KSA) Award of Excellence in 2007 and a "Community Sports Hero" Celebration 2010 award.
Pat had the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch on the final leg of the Kitchener segment of its cross-Canada tour and was guest of honour at KSA's Olympic dinner in January 2010.
Married to his loving wife Gloria for 62 years, together they raised three children, four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Sadly, Pat passed away on August 11, 2015 in his 87th year. Pat was instrumental in the game of hockey in not just the OHA, but across Canada.
