Kevin Smallcomb got his coaching start as an assistant at American River College (Sacramento, CA) from 1985-1989; was University of Arkansas’ graduate assistant from 1989-1990 while earning a master’s degree; he went on to become assistant coach with Mendocino Jr. College in 1991; and in the same year worked in Alaska’s Summer Baseball Collegiate League as assistant coach for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.  Between 1995-1999, Smallcomb was head coach with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots leading them to three league championships in five years, His record is 142 wins, 94 losses with a .602 average.  Smallcomb returned to become head coach/field manager for the Glacier Pilots in 2017.

 

From 1992-2002 Smallcomb served as head coach at Mendocino College where he posted a 250-147 record; was Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1996; and led the Eagles to the California Community College playoffs three times.  In 2010, Smallcomb was inducted into the Mendocino College’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

 

Smallcomb become head coach at the University of Northern Colorado from 2003-2010 where he recorded 195 victories and led the Bears to wins over five top-five-ranked teams. Those victories included a 2008 win over No. 1 Arizona State and a 2006 win over No.2 Nebraska. Northern Colorado competed as an independent through the 2009 season as it transitioned to Division I and Smallcomb led the Bears to the Great West Conference title game in 2010.

 

Most recently, 2013-2016, Smallcomb served as associate head coach at Youngstown State University.

 

Smallcomb earned his bachelor's degree in social science with minors in coaching and history from California State University, Sacramento, in 1985; his master's degree in sport management from Arkansas in 1989. Coach Smallcomb and his wife, Julie are parents of two daughters, Katie and Kendall.
