THE BABCOCK EDITION

Welcome to the Special Alumni Night edition of the Dresden Jr Kings Newsletter highlighting the father and son duo of Shawn and Keith Babcock.

Alumni Shawn Babcock , #5 is honoured tonight by having a banner dedicated to him hang in the arena along side past honoured alumni Joe Park.

As a secret surprise to all outside the DJK executive, we have also hung a banner dedicated to Keith Babcock for his dedication to the hockey club in the many roles he has played and offices he has filled.

We are thrilled to have the Babcock family with us tonight as we recognize with pride the accomplishments and contributions these two magnificent men have brought to our Dresden community and share in the warm memories of the Dresden Jr King Hockey Club.

#5 SHAWN BABCOCK

Shawn Babcock is another Dresden athlete who pursued the game of hockey for as far as it would take him. Shawn played his minor hockey in his home town of Dresden and, as a 15 year old in 1977-78, made it all the way to the Dresden Jr Kings. The following year, he played for Newmarket in the O.H.A. Jr A, and later that season he was called up to play for the Oshawa Generals. In the 1979 season, he became Windsor’s first round draft pick and played for the club until 1981, the year he was traded to the Kingston Canadians, for whom he played until 1982.

Shawn was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980 NHL entry draft, in the third round, 48th pick overall. Beginning in 1981 Shawn played three seasons in the Central Hockey League and the American Hockey League, with stops in Wichita and Moncton. Shawn returned to Kingston as an Assistant Coach for

two seasons through 1986. That was the year he joined a different team, the Kingston Fire Department, for which he is Captain. His love for hockey never left him. Shawn would help coach the Kingston Frontenacs in the 1996 season and play one more year of hockey in 2005 with the Senior A Tamworth Braves.

Shawn was inducted in to the Dresden Hall of Fame – Male Athlete in 2007. He remains a source of pride for his home community and to its hockey fans.

MR. KEITH BABCOCK

Even today Keith Babcock looks like a hockey player. Looks aren’t deceiving. Keith a.k.a. “Logger”, alias “The Dresden Flash” was a tremendous hockey player known for his speed, strength and ability as a playmaker. There was no arena for Keith to start his hockey career in the mid-forties. He and his buddies

learned the game and practiced until dark on a frozen Molly’s Creek. It was a long way from the Olympia Stadium in Detroit, a place Keith got to know well as a hopeful for the NHL Wings in 1953. His hockey travels also included stops in Moose Jaw of the WHL, Senior League action on Vancouver Island, Junior hockey in Wallaceburg and Chatham and of course, with his many seasons in Dresden’s new arena as a member of the Intermediate “A” Dresden Lumberkings. Keith Babcock was also a tireless volunteer for minor hockey, coaching , managing , administrating and sharpening skates for just about every youngster in Dresden. His other contribution to Dresden hockey was with his genetics and tutoring to his youngest son Shawn who became an OHL star and pro hockey player, including 10 games with the Edmonton Oilers back in the Gretsky era.

Today, Keith should be known as Mr Hockey.

Every Friday night you can find him right here at the Dresden Jr King game, turning down invitations to dinner out, movies, etc to be here. He is a legend, and yet he insists on paying his admission, getting 50/50 tickets, a program and now an Ace of Spades ticket. At home, Donna can testify to the fact that he loves to watch hockey on TV. Heck, recently in Toronto one weekend he watched a hockey game as it was projected on a wall down town then later called buddy Bob Everitt to see how the Kings did that night! When the club met to re-organize, Keith was the first one in the door. His commitment and passion are boundless and we love him dearly!

JOE PARK

Joe Park was the first alumni to be honoured by the Dresden Jr King Hockey Club and have his number retired. He has also been inducted in to the Dresden Hall of Fame.

Joe tells us he started playing hockey at the age of 5 in house league as a Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam, then joined the Dresden Jr Kings at 15 to play in the playoff against

Woodstock Navy Jets and stayed until 1975. From 1976 to 1984 he worked with the DJK Hockey Club as a member and served as Vice President and President. He has been married 36 years and is expecting his first grandchild from his daughter and son-in-law in the spring. At 58 he plays hockey every week with a fine bunch of men here in town – the Dresden Squires.

Please note that Joe sends us his resume from an easy chair as he recuperates from a procedure to his knee.

Thank you Joe for sharing with us and thank you for joining us in welcoming Shawn Babcock to your elite club. Shawn’s #5 will not be retired. Present and future players can proudly share in the use of his number.

The Dresden Jr King Hockey Club will add a new alumni banner each year. See you all again next year ! And please feel free to make a nomination by visiting our website.
