Steam's Stack, Clippers Hoover take first weekly honors

GLSCL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 1
Tyler Stack - Cincinnati Steam - Xavier University
Tyler Stack leads the GLSCL after the first week with a .600 batting average going 6-for-10 at the plate. Stack scored five runs and drove in six RBIs during four games as the Steam’s catcher.
He did the majority of his damage in a wild 28-13 win over the Southern Ohio Copperheads on June 9. Cincinnati broke a franchise record that had stood since 2016 with the 28-run outburst.
Stack is an incoming freshman signed to play at Xavier University. He hails from Oswego, Illinois where he recently completed a storied career at Oswego High School. Stack helped lead the Oswego Panthers to the sectional championship game.
GLSCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 1
Matthew Hoover - Muskegon Clippers - Western Michigan University
Matthew Hoover threw five shutout innings in his Clippers debut this season on the way to earning the victory on June 10 over the Royal Oak Leprechauns. Hoover struck out eight batters while scattering two hits and walking just one batter.
Hoover’s performance helped the Clippers extend its winning streak to begin the season at five games. Muskegon is the last undefeated team in the GLSCL going into play at the time of this release.
Hoover just completed his freshman season for the Western Michigan University. The Buchanan, Michigan native threw a total of five innings in six appearance for the Broncos this past spring.
HONORABLE MENTION - Player of the Week
Brandon Scheurer - Muskegon Clippers - Saginaw Valley State
Scheurer had a solid week helping the Clippers get off to a 5-0 start to the 2023 season. He went 8-for-17 at the plate hitting for a .467 batting average with three RBIs and is tied for the GLSCL lead with eight runs scored
Hayden Robbins - Grand Lake Mariners - Morehead State University
Robbins hit for a .467 batting average (7-for-15) with a .600 on base percentage and scored six runs over the course of four games.
Jake Argawal - Southern Ohio Copperheads - Uncommitted recruit (formerly Butte College)
Argawal reached base 10 times in his 16 plates appearances in his first three game of the season. He batted for a .500 average, going 4-for-8, and reached base on five walks and was hit by a pitch.
HONORABLE MENTION - Pitcher of the Week
Thomas Burns - Southern Ohio Copperheads - Olivet Nazarene University
Burns pitched five solid innings in his first start of the season for the Copperheads on June 8. He gave up two runs on four hits while striking a GLSCL single-game high for the season nine strikeouts. Burns did not get a decision in the 4-2 Copperheads win over the Licking County Settlers.
Donny Goodes - Grand Lake Mariners - Adrian College
Doony Goodes made two appearances out of the bullpen for the Mariners. In four shutout innings of work Goodes did not allow a hit while noticing four strikeout and allowing three walks. Goodes also went 3-for-7 at the plate during the week with a triple, home run and four RBIs.
Gannon Wentz - Richmond Jazz - Kent State University
Gannon Wentz went 2-0 for the week out of the Jazz bullpen making the most of his two appearances. Wentz gave up two unearned runs off one hit, striking out four batters in four innings of work.
Will Jaun - Cincinnati Steam - Cornell University
Will Jaun returned to the Steam for a second season where he was mostly a first basemen. In the Steam’s opening day on June 8 against the Richmond Jazz, he got the start on the mound. Jaun threw five shutout innings striking out five batters and giving up just three hits and one walk.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
