Mariners Steele, Locos Pruitt earn Week #3 honors

GLSCL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 3

Lucas Steele - Grand Lake Mariners - Samford University

Lucas Steele hit for a .480 batting average (12-for-25) over the course of seven games this past week. Steele hit two home runs driving in six RBIs and scoring eight runs. The Mariners catcher was 5-for-7 in a double header sweep on June 26 against the Licking County Settlers.

 

Steele leads the GLSCL in home runs (3), tied for the league in runs scored (14) and is fifth in batting average hitting at a .385 clip for the season. 

 

The Hoover, Alabama native just finished a successful freshman season at Samford University. Steele was voted by the coaches as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and was Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American. He hit .315 for the Bulldogs with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs.

 

Steele helped earn Samford a win in a first round game against Southern Miss in the NCAA Auburn Regional before ultimately being eliminated by Golden Eagles. 

 

 

GLSCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 3

 

Jacob Pruitt - Lima Locos - Indiana State University

Jacob Pruitt appeared in two games out of the bullpen for the Locos getting the win in each of those opportunities. For the week, Pruitt threw nine and 1/3 innings giving up just one unearned run and four hits. He strikeout 10 batters combined in his outings versus Royal Oak and Jet Box.

 

Pruitt joined the Locos after the season started playing for Indiana State. The Sycamores advanced to the NCAA Super Regional round falling to TCU.

 

The Yorktown, Indiana native appeared in 12 games out for the bullpen for Indiana State throwing 17.1 innings. Pruitt finished with a 2-1 record striking out 20 batters and only issuing eight walks.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Player of the Week

 

William Jaun - Cincinnati Steam - Cornell University

William Jaun hit for a .571 batting average going 8-for-14 in three games for the Steam. Jaun hit one home run with five RBIs, scoring four runs adding two doubles and one triple to his totals. He went 4-for-5 on June 23 on the road against the Southern Ohio Copperheads.

 

 

Landon Underhill  - Lima Locos  - McLennan Community College

Landon Underhill went .500 at the the plate (8-for-16) in five games for the Lima Locos. Underhill drove in six RBIs, thanks in part to two doubles and one triple. He was also proficient on the base paths with four runs scored and two stolen bases.

 

 

Evan St. Claire - Southern Ohio Copperheads - The University of the Cumberlands

Evan St. Claire was 7-for-18 at the plate hitting for a .389 batting average. St. Claire has three of those hits on June 20 against the Grand Lake Mariners. He hit one home run with three RBIs and two doubles.

 

 

Stoney Smith - Muskegon Clippers - Chattanooga State Tech CC

Stoney Smith hit .381 for the fist place Clippers going 8-for-21 at the plate. Smith has been a key for the team as its leadoff hitter scoring fours and stealing five bases. He also has two doubles win triple and five RBIs.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Pitcher of the Week

 

 

Jack Decker - Muskegon Clippers - Saginaw Valley State

Jack Decker took a no hitter into the eighth inning on June 22 against the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers. Decker struck out a GLSCL high for season 12 batters while giving up just one run, one hit and two walks. The lefty from Farmington Hills, Michigan currently leads the GLSCL with 24 strikeouts on the season.

 

 

Justin Bultemeier - Grand Lake Mariners - Ivy Tech Community College

Justin Bultemeier pitched two seven-inning complete games earning the win on both occasions this week for the Mariners.

Bultemeier shut out the Richmond Jazz on June 19 scattering five hits, striking out six batters and did not allow a walk. On June 25 against Licking County, he surrendered two runs, only one of which was earned while notching four strikeouts.

 

 

Jake Peer - Michigan Monarchs - Henry Ford Community College

In his first start of the season for the Monarchs, Jake Peer threw a nine-inning complete game shutout win against the Jet Box Baseball Club on June 22. Peer gave up eight hits striking out two batters and only allowed one walk during his 89-pitch effort.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
