Clippers Cornwell, Copperheads Rhein earn Week #4 honors

GLSCL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 4

 

Colin Cornwell - Muskegon Clippers - Saginaw Valley State

Colin Cornwell was 9-for-16 over the course of five games this past week. Cornwell had three multi-hit games including going 3-for-4 with two RBIs on June 30 in a win over the Michigan Monarchs. He scored three runs in the opener of a double header on that same day against the Monarchs.

 

Cornwell’s slash for the week was a .563 batting average, .688 slugging percentage and .632 on-base percentage. He laced two doubles, driving in four RBIs and scored four runs.

 

In games played through July 2, Cornwell is the GLSCL’s leading hitter with a .390 batting average. He is also tied for second in doubles (6) and third in RBIs (18).

 

The Sterling Heights, Michigan native just completed his junior season for Saginaw Valley State. Cornwell led the Cardinals with a .342 batting average and was also tops in hits (63), doubles (16) and RBIs (46).

 

The Clippers boast the best record (16-2) in the GLSCL sitting atop of the North Division standings.

 

 

GLSCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 4

 

Colin Rhein - Southern Copperheads - Stony Brook University

Colin Rhein had a lights out performance for Southern Ohio earning his first win over the on July 1 over the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers. Rhein went six shutout innings striking out 12 batters while giving up just one walk and two hits. His 12 strikeouts ties a GLCSL single-game high this season and equates to 18 strikeouts over the course of nine innings.

 

Rhein is in his second season pitching for the Copperheads. He is a previous GLSCL Pitcher of Week winner earning the honor in Week #5 of the 2022 season. For the 2023 season, Rhein has made four starts throwing 21 innings, striking out 28 batters surrendering just three walks.

 

The Lindenhurst, New York resident plays in the spring for Stony Brook University. 

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Player of the Week

 

Justin Rumfield - Lima Locos - Midland College

Justin Rumfield went .471 at the plate hitting 8-for-17 in six games the Locos. Rumfield hit a grand slam walk off home run on June 26 against the Richmond Jazz. He drove in a total of seven RBIs during the week with two doubles and four runs scored.

 

 

Ben Stuart  - Cincinnati Steam - University of Evansville

Ben Stuart hit for a .500 batting average with a .583 on-base percentage in five games for the Steam. Stuart was 6-for-12 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. He did the majority of his work in a game June 30 against the Xenia Scouts when he was 4-for-5 at the plate.

 

 

Aaron Walton - Grand Lake Mariners - Samford University

Aaron Walton was 7-for-19 at the plate hitting .368 for the Mariners in six games over the course of the week. Walton stole five bases including three on June 27 against the Royal Oak Leprechauns. He also drove in three RBIs and scored four runs.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Pitcher of the Week

 

Jack Decker - Muskegon Clippers - Saginaw Valley State

Jack Decker recorded two victories for the first place Clippers over the course of the week, one as a starter and one in relief. In his start against the Michigan Monarchs on June 30, Decker pitched a seven-inning complete game notching nine strikeouts. He leads the GLSCL with five wins and 34 strikeouts while sporting a 1.00 ERA.

 

 

Peyton Nelson - Lima Locos - College of Charleston

Peyton Nelson earned his second win of the season for the Locos in the first game of a double header on July 2 against the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers. Nelson threw six shutout innings striking out seven batters giving just two hits and two walks.

 

 

Calvin Mitchell - Cincinnati Steam - Wright State transfer

Calvin Mitchell pitched five shutout innings on July 1 in an 8-2 win over the first place Xenia Scouts. Mitchell scattered three hits while striking out four batters for his first victory of the season.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
