Mariners Walton and Clippers Decker Earn Week #5 Honors

GLSCL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 5

Aaron Walton - Grand Lake Mariners - Samford University

Aaron Walton 7-for-16 over the course of five games this past week. Walton’s on base percentage was an impressive .538 clip. In addition, he drove in five RBIs and racked up five stolen bases. Walton helped lead Grand Lakes in four wins out of its five games played.

 

It was recently announced that Walton was voted as a starter for the South Division team in the 2023 GLSCL All-Star game on July 18 at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. He is second in the GLSCL with a .382 batting average.

 

The Brentwood, Tennessee resident just completed his first season at Samford University. In his freshman season, Walton earned 90 at bats hitting .233 with six home runs and 21 RBIs. The Bulldogs won the Southern Conference tournament earning a spot in the Auburn regional where they opened up with an extra inning victory over Southern Miss.

 

 

GLSCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - WEEK 5

 

Jack Decker - Muskegon Clippers - Saginaw Valley State

Jack Decker the Muskegon Clippers with another outstanding performance on July 8 against the Jet Box Baseball Club. Decker threw eight shutout innings giving up just one hit and only allowing two base runners. Decker recorded the a GLSCL-season high 14 strikeouts while improving his record to 6-0 on the season. 

 

Decker now leads the GLSCL in both strikeouts (48), victories (6) and ERA (0.77). He was selected to pitch for the North Division team at the GLSCL All-Star game on July 18 at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.

 

The Farmington Hills, Michigan native just finished his first season at Saginaw Valley State University. Decker threw seven and 1/3 innings in limited action his freshman season. The Cardinals finished in third place of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings at the end of the spring.

 

The Clippers are 21-3 on the season leading the North Division standings by three and a half games over the second place Lima Locos.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Player of the Week

 

Zimba Cadiz - Cincinnati Steam - Lake Erie College

Zimba Cadiz went .417 at the plate hitting 5-for-12 in five games the Steam. Cadiz reached base on six walks helping boost his one base percentage to a .579 clip. He also produced a .667 slugging percentage hitting a home run off the Grand Lake Mariners on July 8.

 

Connor Ostrander  - Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers - Western Michigan

Connor Ostrander hit for a .385 batting average going .385 at the plate. Ostrander is the GLSCL leading hitter on the season with a batting average of .385 on the season. He was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in a July 5 win over the Michigan Monarchs.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Pitcher of the Week

 

Justin Bultemeier - Grand Lake Mariners - Tiffin University

Justin Bultemeier pitched a nine-inning complete game victory for the Mariners on July 8 in an 11-3 win over the Cincinnati Steam. Bultemeier struck out a season-high seven batters while giving up just three hits and two walks. It was Bultemeier’s third complete game of the season which is tops in the GLSCL. He just recently announced his commitment as a transfer to Tiffin University.

 

 

Jared Kloth - Cincinnati Steam - Wheaton College

Jared Kloth made two appearances for the Steam this week making an direct impact on the decision of both games. Kloth recorded a three-inning save on July 3 in a 7-2 win over the Licking County Settlers. He went four innings out go the bullpen earning the win on July 7 against the Southern Ohio Copperheads. Kloth combined his efforts in the two games recording seven strikeouts in seven innings while giving up just one unearned run.

 

 

ABOUT THE GREAT LAKES SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUE 

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
