Muskegon's Sam Clay wins Player of the Week

GLSCL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - July 15, 2024

 

Sam Clay - Muskegon Clippers - Davenport University

Sam Clay only played in three games this past week but in that time went 9-for-13 at the plate for the Clippers. Clay’s slash line was a .692 batting average, and on base percentage of .764, and a 1.231 slugging percentage. He hit two home runs with eight RBIs and two doubles. Clay also reached base on three walks and stole two bases. 

 

Clay tied the modern GLSCL record (games since 2011) with 13 totals bases in a wild 20-19 loss to the Grand Lake Mariners. Clay went 6-for-6 with two home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored on July 9.

 

The Brighton, Michigan native just completed his freshman season at Davenport University. He played the first 13 games as the everyday shortstop before an injury shut down his season for the Panthers on March 8.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION - Player of the Week

 

Jacob Gumieny - Michigan Monarchs - Southeastern University

Jacob Gumieny hit .500 for the week going 12-for-22 with a .545 batting average. Gumieny drove in five RBIs racking up six doubles and scoring five runs. His three-game stretch over the weekend at Southern Ohio was one he’ll never forget going 11-for-15 and was the first GLSCL player since 2014 to hit four doubles in a game.

 

Jackson Rains - Grand Lake Mariners - North Arkansas College

Jackson Rains hit for a .423 batting average (11-for-26) with a .464 on base percentage and .769 slugging percentage. Rains hit three home runs with five RBIs and two doubles. He was 4-for-6 with two home runs and four runs scored on July 9 against the Xenia Scouts.

 

Noah Ruiz - Xenia Scouts - Biola University

Noah Ruiz hit for a .428 batting average going 9-for-21 at the plate. Ruiz drove in seven RBIs, scoring six runs stealing eight bases. His 28 steals on the season is part of a three-way tie for the most in the GLSCL this season. On July 12 against the Grand Lake Mariners was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of 7 active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
