MUSKEGON CLIPPERS 3 HAMILTON JOES 2
MARSH FIELD - The Muskegon Clippers held off a ninth inning scare defeating the first place Hamilton Joes 3-2 at Marsh Field.
The Clippers (17-12) pickup a full game in the GLSCL standings over the Joes (22-7) and a half game on the idle Lima Locos (18-12) maintaining its spot in third place.
Muskegon benefited from an outstanding pitching performance out of starter Keegan Batka (Central Michigan). Batka, making just his second appearance of the season, pitched seven innings giving up just one unearned run. He struck out 11 batters while only giving up one hit and one walk for his first victory of the season.
Hamilton scored that unearned run taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Tommy Harrison (Miami University) lead off the inning reaching on an error. He advanced to third on a single by Micah Geise (Lake Erie College). Harrison scored from third base on a passed ball.
The Clippers tied the game in the fifth inning when Cooper Hums (Western Michigan) scored on a RBI-single by Gabe Bonemer (Calvin University).
Muskegon took the lead 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Ashten Wong (Loyola Marymount) driving in Ethan Baird (Menlo College transfer).
The Clippers scored the all important insurance run in the eighth inning. Pinch runner Owen Graves (Aquinas College) scored on an infield single by Wong stretching the advantage to 3-1.
The Joes rallied in the ninth inning loading the bases with two outs. Brayden Fraasman (North Carolina State) scored from third base on a wild pitch.
With the tying run 90 feet away and the go ahead run standing at second base, the Joes had Muskegon’s closer Lukas Brewer (Lansing CC) on the ropes.
Brewer struck out Paul Osting (Lincoln Trail) for the elusive final out. The save is Brewer’s third in as many appearances since going the team on June 28.
The rubber game of the series takes place on Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm. The Clippers look to be the first team in the GLSCL this season to win a series over the mighty Joes.
XENIA SCOUTS 15 GRAND LAKE MARINERS 5 - FINAL/8 Innings
MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Xenia Scouts moved into fourth place in the GLSCL standings with a commanding 15-5 run-rule victory on the road against the Grand Lake Mariners.
The Scouts (14-18) currently lead a three-team battle for the final spot in the GLSCL playoff race.
Xenia first basemen Jacob Winzenread (Southern Indiana) has loved his stay so far in Celina. Winzenread went 3-for-5 on Saturday with a double, a home run and three RBIs.
So far on the weekend, Winzenread is 5-for-8 against the Mariners with three home runs, six RBIs and five runs scored.
Grand Lake (9-20) got off the an early 4-0 lead. Three consecutive batters provided the fire power for the Mariners. Austyn Peak (Morehead State) and Drew Emerson (Ohio Dominican) hit back-to-back RBI-singles. Brayton Bowen (University of Indianapolis) followed with a two-run double.
The Scouts answered with seven runs in the third innings on just two hits. The big blow came from Bo Solley (Harding University) who smacked a two-run double.
Winzenread began a five-run rally in the seventh inning with a two run homer, his fourth of the season.
Xenia scored three more runs in the eighth inning giving them a commanding 15-4 lead.
The Mariners scored a run in the bottom of the eighth but it wasn’t enough to prevent the 10-run mercy rule giving the Scouts a 15-5 victory.
Kaden Wu (Cal State Monterey Bay) raised his batting average above the .300 mark with a 2-for-3 performance. Wu added three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases to his impressive ledger.
Brennen Holland (Lourdes University) went six innings for the Scouts improving his record to 3-1 on the season.
The Scouts look for the road series victory against the Mariners with the first pitch at Montgomery Field scheduled for 4:05pm.
SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS 13 MICHIGAN MONARCHS 7
BOB WREN STADIUM - The Southern Ohio Copperheads bounced back with a 13-7 win over the Michigan Monarchs on Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Copperheads (13-19) got off to a hot start scoring eight runs in the first inning. Ben Clark (Oakland University) and Charlie Longmeier (University of Evansville) each took advantage of bases loaded opportunities. Clark delivered and two-run single and Longmeier added a two-RBI double.
The Monarchs (12-17) answered with five runs in the top of the second inning.
Kimo Fukofuka (San Jose State transfer) scored on an RBI-ground out by Liam Pollack (Oakland University). Jad Oestrike (Eastern Michigan) drove in a pair of runs with a base loaded double. Derek Ruiz (Lander University) scored on a wild pitch and Oestrike crossed the plate on an RBI-single by Tanner Mally (Western Michigan).
The Copperheads stretched its lead back out to 10-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Southern Ohio put the game out of reach with three runs crossing the pay station in the seventh inning.
Four different Copperhead batters enjoyed two-hit games with Longmeier having both his go for extra bases.
Ethan Stewart (Ohio University) held the Michigan bats in check during the middle innings earning the victory. Making his Copperheads debut, Stewart threw four innings out of the bullpen giving up just one unearned run. He scattered six hits while not allowing a walk and striking out three batters.
Ty Garza (Wayne State), coming off hitting for the cycle earlier in the week, went 3-for-5 at the plate for Michigan raising his batting average at .407 on the season.
The rubber game of the series takes place in Athens on Sunday at 5:05pm. The winner will help its cause staying in the hunt for the elusive fourth playoff spot in the GLSCL standings.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of 7 active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
